Inspiration from the MCU

So, the MCU has been around for a very long time. Not as long as Warcraft, but about as long as WoW. It is hard to think of any modern Sci-Fi universe that hasnt taken some inspiration from the MCU.

What WoW should take from the MCU, that they have not done effectively, is a consistent effort to reinforce the events of previous installments, not retcon.

Marvel does this so often and so effectively that it is hard to say if these things were always intended or after-market add-ons. Take for example Ironman in Endgame. He says to Steve Rogers, after Thanos shows up to stop the time heist reset, “When you mess with time, it tends to mess back.” Since the events of Loki, everyone tends to agree that Ironman was probably intentionally foreshadowing He Who Remains and the sacred timeline. He may have been, or— just as easily— they could have just built the Loki series to turn cool things from Endgame into something better. This kind of thing pops up in Marvel movies so often that it would be absurd to think that all of these writers and directors have been in sync completely since Ironman I.

Take the Marvel short The Consultant. If you havent seen it, Spoilers ahead.

** SPOILERS **

In the mid credits scene of The Incredible Hulk, Tony Stark has a meeting with Lt. General Ross where he talks about solving Ross’s “problem” with The Avenger Initiative. We are forgiven for assuming that Stark is referring to Bruce Banner. Fast Forward to 2011. After Ironman 2, Tony Stark has been informed by Nick Fury that they would rather work with him as a consultant. The Consultant tells the short story of Phil Coulson planning with Jasper Sitwell to use the offensive and arrogant Tony Stark as a patsy to sabotage negotiations to release Blonsky (Abomination) from custody to be a part of the Avengers. Marvel completely recontextualizes the scene from The Incredible Hulk tying it in with Ironman 2 and making the scene seem even more relevant to The Avengers and Agents of Shield. This wasn’t planned. This one shot exists because the majority (80%) of the budget for 2 “one shots” was used by A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor’s Hammer. But it doesn’t feel like a ret con. It just feels like a deeper revelation.

This is what Blizzard needs to take away from the MCU. We dont need a superhero movie. We just need stuff that makes us feel like the old stuff makes more sense. Not less.

The MCU might be relatively flush with recent success but it had decades of content to base stories on. And Marvel as a company went through many ups and downs before Disney flushed it with cash.

Blizzard might be on the cusp of something similar now that Microsoft is buying it. Maybe in 3 years or so, when the merger is complete and changes are discernable, Blizzard will have a similar turn around as far as a coherent and cohesive direction.
