Inner Light Talent choice

For Protection Paladin, Inner Light talent only activates when Shield of the Righteous buff falls off and lasts 4 seconds. The other choice is Redoubt and that is every time you use Shield of the Righteous you gain a stacking buff of 2% strength and stamina for 10 seconds.

SotR is your main spender, so Inner Light is not a good choice because you have to wait for SotR buff to fall off first to get the Inner Light buff. If this was changed to be active during SotR like Redoubt it would be a more even choice in power.

This has been discussed since Battle for Azeroth. Inner light was useful because you could /cancelaura it, but then they nerfed it so you can’t anymore. What that means is that inner light is only good if your haste is so incredibly low that you can’t maintain SoTR uptime. But if you’re specced for low haste you’re probably having a bad time anyways. So Inner Light is just vestigial at this point.

I havent tested inner light as redoubt is too good. But they changed VDH’s talent which gives them 10% DR when spike falls off to either fallimg off or freshing. If blizz hasn’t “fixed” inner light, we can expect a change coming sooner or later.
Edit: I tested it. It’s still a useless node.

When blizzard brought the talent trees back they said they will balance and fix unused talents. There is so many classes and specs that have a talent or two like this. They sound cool but need to be altered slightly to work. You look at Redoubt and it lasts 10 seconds and gets refreshed when you refresh SotR, that is crazy compared to Inner Light.

I don’t think you think of this in its full context.

At the start of DF, Blizzard intention was to nerf SotR uptime.
They explicitly said this.
To this end, they removed HP generation from AS.
Inner light was supposed to support that change and play-style.

The problem is that it’s the ONLY talent they added to support this playstyle and they left in ALL the talents that emphasize spamming SotR.

And low and behold, it still worked, people kept playing it like they use to because they could and it was still working.

Fast-forward to TWW, they STILL didn’t followed through on their DF ideas and have reverted to making pally spam SotR as the main trope to both keep it up 100% and reduce the CDs of all your defensive.

It should have been reworked but they didn’t have the time apparently.

Now it’s sitting comfortably as the “best” tank and it will only get nerf as the expac goes on because the uptime of it’s current CDs will only go up and it’s already pretty decent/ok as it is.
