In the battlenet app, when i go to start classic, it says classic needs to update. The bar is red, says it is initializing, will fill the bar and then start over, saying initializing the whole time.

Have you tried restarting the computer. That should shutdown any Wow or Blizzard processes that may be interfering with update. Afterwards right click on the BNet launcher icon then select Run as Administrator.
You might also right click on the bottom task bar. Select Task Manager then look down the list for any running Wow or Blizzard processes. If you see any highlight then click the End Task button. Try update afterwards.

I did try to restart, I am currently reinstalling, to see how that works. Thanks for the response.
