"initializing" and "waiting for update"

Since yesterday, my Launcher has been stuck at the beginning of the progress bar, usually saying “initializing” or sometimes “waiting for another update” briefly then back to “initializing”.

I’ve turned on viewing of hidden files and deleted the Battle.net folder. I’ve disabled my firewall. I’ve gone into Task Manager and killed all Blizzard processes and made sure the WoW Voice Proxy wasn’t there. I don’t know what else to try.

I’m able to play the game by launching the WoW executable directly, but I suspect this is going to stop working on Tuesday when the patch drops. Help?

Hey there Malaprop,

It sounds like the Battle.net app is having issues updating WoW, or recognizing that WoW is up to date. This can happen if there is a problem with Agent.exe (the background process responsible for updating the app and all the games).

I’d recommend giving the rest of the steps on this article a shot to see if they help.

I’m trying to follow the instructions, but when I go to reinstall the battle.net client, the progress bar keeps getting to 79% (“Installing Blizzard Battle. net”) and then the progress bar … goes back to 2%.

edit to add: (And yes, before doing that I’ve gone through all the temp locations like %APPDATA%, deleted all battlenet and blizzard folders, etc, made sure all Blizz processes had stopped including the update agent, etc.)

Hey Malaprop,

Let’s make sure we’ve done a clean reinstall of the Blizzard app:

  1. Uninstall the Blizzard app
  2. Next open the temp locations and delete any Battlenet and Blizzard folders you see in each location. Press Windows Key + R and type:
    • %LOCALAPPDATA%
    • %APPDATA%
    • %TEMP%
    • %PROGRAMDATA%
  3. Finally go ahead and reinstall the app from here. Make sure you run as Admin.

If this doesn’t help, my guess is that there may be a background program such as security software that could be blocking the install. Try closing and disabling all other programs so we can test the app by itself.

Deleted all those folders. Rebooted. Made sure the only app running was my web browser. Even turned off virus & threat protection (Windows 10 security settings).

Ran installer as admin. Progress bar hits 78% and goes back to zero. I leave it running. It gets to 84%. It goes back to zero.

I’m watching the task manager. Each time it does this cycle, I see the Blizzard Update Agent (32 bit) showing up in the task list while the progress bar fills. Then when the progress bar pauses for a bit, at 78% this time and 84% that time and then 78% again the time after that, the agent disappears from the list, and then the progress bar goes back to zero. Then the agent reappears for the next futile run through the progress bar.

Edit to add: Oooh, after letting it fill and fail about 10 times, the installer did finish and I have the launcher again … with the same bad behavior. I’m stuck at “Initializing” in the retail client and “Waiting on another update” in the PTR.

Based on what you described, there’s probably another program causing a conflict.

If you can’t identify which program may be causing the problem, I’d recommend creating a support ticket and include your MSinfo so we can take a closer look at the system. Make sure to list the steps you have tried or link to this forum thread so there isn’t any confusion.

Well I don’t know quite what I did, but a ton of deleting and reinstalling and now my Launcher is doing the right thing, finishing up, and giving me the “Play” button. Hopefully it works right tomorrow!

If I have issues again I’ll open a ticket and send my msinfo/dxdiag.

Thanks!
