Infinite updating loop

I haven’t played the game for a long time and with dragon flight the one expansion I’ve wanted to play for a while now, I bought it a few days ago got sometime so I can catch up a few of my characters in levels for the release but now the game is stuck in an updating loop when I install it, it doesn’t even attempt to install the game but freezes at initializing (2127019/2127019) and then loops over and over.
I have done these:
Started in admin mode
Uninstalled and reinstalled the game
Uninstalled the app and reinstalled it
Restarted computer
Flushed DNS
Added exception to AV
Uninstalled Reinstalled with a cache kill
Added firewall exception
Still it’s stuck in this updating loop and my time that I bought it still ticking down.

My problem had devolved from not launching the game to this update loop.
Have you been able to figure it out or is it still looping?

Same issue. It only seems to be retail. Classic and Overwatch 2 work just fine. Issue in the latest release that they are not aware of yet?

Nope it’s still looping for me even after trying more uninstalling and reinstalling ect It’s getting annoying.

Same here. This is a really old issue, I’m not sure how it is still occuring. It all started when I had to reinstall the battle.net app for issues with WOTLK classic not running properly. One of the suggestions was to reinstall that, which resolved the issue with classis, but broke live. The fact that this thread is not more extensive is a bit troubling to me though. I wish a blue would pop in and just tell us that it is or is not widespread. All other Blizzard games patched without issue though so IDK.

I had the exact issue. I went into the World Of Warcraft folder and deleted the retail things, made another folder under the WOW folder, and that’s where I installed to so it could not do the resource sharing, and it had to change the install path. It’s finally installing.

Hey there,

Thank you all for taking the time to report this. We aren’t aware of any server-side problems that would be causing this, so we’ll want to try a few troubleshooting steps to narrow this down. Update loop issues are typically caused by a conflicting third-party program, damaged/corrupted local Battle.net files, or a problem connecting to the patching server. Please try the following:

  1. Fully update or temporarily uninstall antivirus programs which may be interfering with your connection to the patching server. If you’d like more information on troubleshooting security applications, click here

  2. Reinstall the Battle.net Desktop App with these steps:

Uninstall the Blizzard Battle.net App (skip Step 6 for now, we will re-install later).

    • Next (before re-installing) let’s delete any Battle.net, Blizzard, and/or Blizzard Entertainment folders in the Windows temporary file locations below. If you don’t see all 3 folders in each location, that is okay—just delete the folders you have):

    • Press Windows Key + R and type: %LOCALAPPDATA%. Delete any Battle.net, Blizzard, and/or Blizzard Entertainment folders.
    • Repeat the process for %APPDATA%, %TEMP%, and %PROGRAMDATA%. Delete any Battle.net, Blizzard, and/or Blizzard Entertainment folders.

    • Finally, re-install the App.

If the error persists, many potential problems related to your installation of Windows can be resolved by creating a new administrator account, logging into it, and testing on the new account.

If the issue is fixed on the new Admin account, this could indicate damaged or missing Windows system files or an issue with how the old user account is configured. This is somewhat common, and the easiest fix is to move any user-specific files that you wish to keep from the old user account to the new admin account. You can also work with Microsoft’s Support to troubleshoot the problem with the old account if preferred.

Hopefully, one of these steps will do the trick. Please let us know if you have any questions or run into additional issues.

I have done this already as I have indicated these solutions are not working for me.

Also this problem doesn’t affect other games only main game wow if there was a program blocking the battle.net app wouldn’t it affect other game installs ?
Overwatch runs fine, hearth stone runs fine, warcraft 3 installs fine.

I’m in a similar boat. After getting a CAS error, I decided to attempt to scan and reverify game files, however it keeps looping around after a scan, downloading something that it looks like is not actually downlaoding.

Creating a new admin account and kicking off the update seems to have knocked things loose for me. Able to resume the download on my normal account now, hopefully it finishes without issue

Going through my logs keeps bringing up agent.exe has ran into an unknown exception logs for agent.8022 also say unknown exception and exception message says bad allocation and repeats for every single attempt to download WoW and only wow the logs are clean when installing other games.
I did a fresh reinstall of the app and destroyed the left over files and tried again same error in the logs.
Are you sure there’s no issues on your end cause it seems to be coming from the agent.exe…

I’ve had this error ever since they “fixed” the complete re-install loop. It’s quite annoying and it’s across different computers so it’s a game-issue.

Well guess I will wait to resub and do prepatch stuff can’t even install the game.

Zyhgar - I certainly understand wanting to avoid duplicate or redundant troubleshooting steps, however, configuring a program to “run as admin” is very different when compared to creating a new admin account and then testing on that new account. I do see that the former step (run as admin) is in your list of troubleshooting steps, but creating a new admin account is not.

Additionally, while we cannot anticipate how an antivirus will interact with the Battle.net Desktop App & Update Agent, it is important to eliminate antivirus’ as a potential culprit when troubleshooting update/install issues. We are not aware of any server-side issues that would be causing this, and in the event that there was a server-side problem, we would see a significant influx of contact reporting the same problem. That is not the case with this issue, and so we are limited to troubleshooting as if it is an isolate issue.

Weltster - If the issue impacts multiple computers/systems using the same Internet connection, try temporarily testing an alternate network such as a mobile hotspot or VPN.

I’m having the same issue, I opened up the logs for the Agent.exe folder.

The logs say

switcher argument[0]:

That is followed by session number.

Could be the agent is not getting a response when making a request of some sort. I’m not 100% sure but it could be a failed handshake between the Agent and whatever it’s has to communicate with.

If that is the case I should note that dose not outright mean it’s on blizzards end because there’s stuff your PC has to do internally before it sends stuff out but it could be.

This happened to me last year but not from installing. It was a scan and repair issue. After days of trying everything I couldn’t get it fixed. There are websites that talk about this. Fortunately I have a second hard drive on my computer and successfully installed it there. I am able to play fine now but we shouldn’t have to do that. Just to be clear I tried EVEYTHING! The closest I could come was that there are files that you can’t delete somewhere. So when you uninstall it doesn’t change the problem. I feel bad for players when this happens.

Fortunately I have a second hard drive on my computer and successfully installed it there.

I ended up doing the same thing to fix the problem (on an M1 Mac).

Everything I’ve seen indicates this is a you-not-me problem on Blizzard’s end. There’s some problem with the WotLK client or server architecture that only emerges in certain circumstances.

Nor is this the only problem I’ve had thus far. I have a character whose graphics always stutter. Just that character, not any of the others. Same graphic settings and addons.

I also had an issue where using the in-game equipment manager would cause me to hard crash to desktop (the application itself died without realizing - the only error reports were from the OS). Then the problem expanded to using any complex inventory mod (AdiBags, ArkInventory) but not one-bag mods like Bagnon. Again, this was only with a single character. It should be impossible for any addon to cause this behavior because they’re executed inside a walled garden - but apparently the garden itself has a few flaws.

The closest I could come was that there are files that you can’t delete somewhere.

This was my assumption as well. I would do a re-install, yet it would remember details like where my last install was or my Blizzard password.

So I resolved it on my end, My issue was exactly the same as the OP and I followed the trouble shooting steps all posted by Skelgarer with no success. So if your in the same boat I recommend this.

I went to my windows 10 settings (it’s the little gear on the bottom bar) and into accounts settings. I selected the option to “Sign in with a local account instead.” You’ll need to give it a name and password but shouldn’t need to give it an email, if it asks you clicked the wrong option. I then tried running battle.net as per usual with this new temporary windows account (it should port over all your settings if your the admin) and it started the update with no issue.

Once the install completed I just signed out and back into my regular account, I’m not sure if this is a permanent fix you may have to do this again next time an update comes around but it should address it for now.

This happened to me suddenly today. My Wrath Classic was having major freezing issue out of the blue. So I ran a scan and repair on it. Now it’s stuck in an infinite update loop. The nutty thing is now retail wow is also stuck in the same loop and I hadn’t touched it. Overwatch and Hearthstone are fine.

Happened to me today too. After today’s maintenance, my game has a freezing issue and crashes after starting m+. So, I decided to click Scan&Repair but now I am in an infinite update loop.
