Inevitable Demise

For people who play affliction and run inevitable demise trait pvE, is the gameplay that you just use Drain Life as your filler in place of shadowbolt like how Drainsoul worked in legion?

I’ve been putting it off, because I felt that ID was more of a pvp talent, and ID never really simmed as well as some other traits. But I’m kind of looking to change up my rotation a bit and liked a drain filler better than the shadowbolt.

My guess would be that the opener would stay the same with shadowbolt spam after the inital dot/cooldown dump, but then once you get the stacks, you just use drain life instead of shadowbolt for filler.

Curious as to how others use a trait that I’ve ignored so far.

Also, I don’t play with macros much, but is there a macro you could make that would cast drainlife instead of shadowbolt if > X stacks of ID or something like that? Would be pretty sweet and smooth.

You use it at max stacks most of the time. Only time you wouldn’t is if like a boss is about to become immune to damage and you only have like 20 stacks. But Shadow Bolt is still your filler.

Use it when you (a) desperately need some healing and don’t have a healthstone/healthpot or (b) are above ~20 stacks and need damage now (add/boss needs to die in the next few seconds), or © are above 40 stacks.

You cannot make a macro that will cast the correct spell based on the number of stacks you have.

Thank you both. I guess that’s why I’ve been ignoring it, mostly, since I prefer traits that are being used all of the time over ones that are situational (considering my more casual play that ignores mythic raiding). But I do see the value in a spell for affliction that can do more immediate damage to a priority mob.

Do the stacks go away after one channel of drain life?

So for example in the Fetid devourer fight, would you save them up while fighting the boss, and then when the orb things come up, you dot it up then drain life it to make best effect of the trait? I haven’t been into the new raid yet, so I’m using that as an example I’m more familiar with.

Iirc, as soon as you cast DL, all the stacks are used up. It will reset, and start stacking again. So, make sure you won’t be interrupted when you’re ready to cast it.

yup stacks drop once the channel begins, which as said above is why you wanna channel the whole thing without getting interrupted. id suggest draining between 45-50 stacks. for your fetid example you have the right idea, during progression i used it to either help execute an already healing a small add or to finish off the big add.
