Incorrect Version of Game

  • I updated Windows this morning and after that it was causing my computer to crash when playing WoW. I rolled bac kthe update, but now Battle.net doesn’t recognize WoW or Classic.

  • I choose the correct folder to locate the game, but it says it’s the incorrect version.

  • I reinstalled Battle.net but it’s the same issue.

  • I can launch and play both games fine directly from the WoW.exe files in the game folders.

  • If I choose to install the game again it says my SSD doesn’t have enough space.

Is there a way to fix this without deleting all game files and starting from scratch? I am ok now but when the game gets updated I don’t think it will work any longer as it updates through battle.net.

Howdy!

Seems like the Blizzard app isn’t able to locate the game. I would recommend try the following steps:

  1. Shut down the Blizzard app completely, give it 30 seconds to fully shut down. Press (Windows key + R) Type in: %programdata%
Hit the enter key. Delete any folder named: Blizzard, Blizzard Entertainment or Battle.net.

  2. Startup the Blizzard app but don’t locate the game. Select install and select the folder the game is installed too. For example select: C:\Program Files(x86) if the game is installed to C:\Program Files(x86)\World of Warcraft_Retail_

See if that helps! Thank you!

Thanks.

  1. I rebooted and it’s still happening. Also reinstalled the app.
  2. I can’t do that as it says I need 62 GB of free space which I do not have. Obviously I am hoping it would just see the files there, but it doesn’t and says I need that free space.

edit: I was able to choose install for Classic as it only asked for 4GB of space. i did that an it’s working, but now when I choose locate game for retail it just changes the battle .net UI to classic every time. No errors or anything. There has to be a way to fix this without reinstalling everything. It’s all there and working separately.

Exalter,

Based on what happened to trigger this, it’s likely the files are too mangled to be understood by the application. When you have a system level crash, it can damage the data on your harddrive. You’ve basically got two options for this:

  1. Move the game data to another harddrive with more space, point the battle.net application to that folder, click install, let it patch, then move it back
  2. Reinstall the game entirely.

Keep in mind that if the problem comes back even after a reinstall, it may indicate a security program conflict or harddrive damage.
