Inappropriate names are getting out of control

A few bad names are not out of control. They’re just par for the course.

The only server type where they enforce any sort of name rules is RP servers unless it is really egregious.

Nah, sexual oriented, slurs and RL impersonating is not allowed on any server.

I don’t report every bad name, just the ones that are really gross.

If that is the case, then like the OP I see a lot of inappropriate names.

You could turn off names and restrict chat if you are introducing a young one to the game.

There are parental controls to an extent.

I guess it depends how old the kid is. And if they have their own computer.

This is generally the best advice :

When I would play with my nieces and nephews- even party chat was off for them.

Parental controls can help, also seconding an RP realm. The names aren’t perfect but they’re 80% better than standard realms. I recommend Wyrmrest Accord if she wants to play Horde, it has a healthy population, and use the parental controls to block certain chat channels etc.

I’m not sure… I’ve had people hit on me on there and being inappropriate just for being Vulpera. The server is known for it’s furry community and is the horde version of Moonguard.
=x

RP realms do have more strict naming rules, however they might not necessarily be a… more “modest” environment for someone young. :upside_down_face:

it’ll help build good character, dont worry about it!

Don’t put her on a Normal server. RP servers have a lot less of that.

Don’t engage. Report if it’s reportable.

Depends on how old your neice is. If we are talking 10 or 11, then the entier internet is dangerous for someone her age. That’s not just WOW.

But if she’s 35 with two kids of her own then she’s a big girl and can make her own decision.

Blizzard lost control of the community long long ago (debatable if they ever had control). At this point nothing will help because it only takes 1 in a 100 people to spoil the bunch.

WoWs biggest problem is 100% the community. When blizzard went “lol esports” they attracted the people associated with it. Somehow FFXIV figured it out but I am guessing that’s because they hire more GMs and foster a different community.

Blizzard doesn’t really enforce naming rules on roleplaying servers either. They haven’t done so in a long time; run around Valdrakken for about five minutes and you will see exactly what I’m talking about.

People who do actually roleplay on RP servers will often download TRP3 or some other third party addon that lets them set their own in-character name that other people with the addon can see (although nowadays, people seem to use the addon like it’s a social media platform).

Secondly, WoW has always been lopsided and far-fetched in how it deals with names. I once had a character named “Toughcrowd” who was flagged for renaming within a day of creating him but I have seen (and known) people named Bludfart and Harrysac who went months before being flagged.

And really, OP - I don’t know how old your niece is, but if you don’t feel comfortable exposing them to the internet at a younger age, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. But the ESRB even states that experiences will change with online play so that is something that adults always need to consider if they’re thinking about kids access online games.

Do not engage. That’s my advice. Report, ignore, move on.

Inappropriate names are you biggest concern? Not the content and politics that’s been going around in this game?
