Yep. I’m sure this has been brought up many times before but Blizzard REALLY needs to reconsider releasing names for inactive accounts/characters.
They do release names in waves. Some folks who collect the names actually are able to figure out when it happens as well. Probably determination.
Which name are you trying to get
I don’t think this is true anymore. I think they are automatically released when the account reaches the time limit during which it is not logged into.
They do release names, but only for inactive accounts. Taking a break from a particular character won’t cause you to lose that name, but inactivity on an account will release the names, I believe after ~4 years/2expansions?
This is no longer how it’s done.
Now, its names are released if the Battlenet account hasn’t been active in two expansions.
Edit to add, this was the wording in the support article:
All the character names in a Battle.net account automatically become available after the Battle.net account remained inactive for two expansions. Blizzard Customer Support will not help with releasing the name of a character for you, even if the player who has the name has stopped playing.
That wording seems to have been removed from the article as of a month ago. I’m curious as to why. Because now it sounds like names are never released at all.
They did a big name release on Area 52 not too long ago. It’s how I got a few 3 letter names and some other correctly spelled words.
Would not be mad if they did another release but chances are at least a few of the names people want are being actively used or in some cases, are being sold by people who want to make a quick bit of gold.
They don’t
It wouldn’t surprise me if it became a paid character service.
They literally have a message that pops up and says they do not release names even if it’s inactive
Where is this pop up message?
When you create a character and a name is already taken it pops up under the character name box
That states “That name is taken. Taken names can’t be claimed (even if inactive).” It doesn’t state names are never freed up, just that the name you have in the box is not available to take at the present moment.
Speculation hat on for a moment: I suspect that’s so people don’t try to open tickets asking for a GM to give them a name someone else has.
Not on Retail. There’s no pop up at all. There is a mouseover that Battlecruisr screenshotted.
Simple fix would be allow surnames.
Also apostrophes and hyphens, since those are part of naming conventions of playable races.
Yes on retail.
It’s the same message as the one above. It does not state what you are claiming.
