In the short lived 1.12 patch version of Vanilla, what are the strongest and weakest classes in both PvE and PvP?

What in your opinion out of all the specs (i.e. Shadow Priest, Combat Rogue, Survival Hunter, etc.) are the strongest and absolutely bottom of the barrel weakest classes in Vanilla? How would you rank the ~27 different class specs in vanilla in terms of PvP and PvE. Which classes are the best of the best for both, and which ones might as well be deleted from existence?

Depends if you are asking about 1v1 situations or group play

both then, its just your own opinion – you can include just 1v1s, small group, world pvp, or massive scale.

the world and ranking of your choice is your oyster, friendo.

Retreckoning paladin 1v1 nothing can match a reck bomb.

Here’s a quick rundown on my experience with Vanilla PvP.

A well played Hunter is difficult to match because they have 41 yard range and aspect of the cheetah. You’ll need to do something tricky to break their infinite kiting potential. If the Hunter can anticipate what you’re gonna do they are almost untouchable.

Warlocks are also pretty scary. With Soul Link their survivability is off the charts. Conflag spec gives them access to one of the cheapest insta kill combos in the game (Seduce-Soul Fire-Immo-Conflag)

I also think Druids are very underrated. Shapeshifting is a very powerful mechanic which gives them unmatched mobility. If one thing is consistently strong across all video games it is mobility. Pair with that some strong bursty spells or some hots and they’re a force to be reckoned with.

As far as gimped specs there really aren’t many. Prot warrior is clearly meant to tank and not much else. Priest’s Holy tree is not quite as good as Disc. Feral Druids don’t deal enough burst damage to compete with some of the better melee.

Finally speaking from experience the Combat Rogue is terrible. The tree is set up to do sustained damage and that just isn’t relevant in Vanilla’s very bursty PvP scene. You have 1 trick and that is Adrenaline Rush. It really isn’t worth losing all of the control Subtlety offers just to get it.

1v1 kings
Shadow priest
Hunters (control)
Hemo/cold blood rogues (control)
Balance hybrid druids (control)

PVP:
Top Tier
Hunter(All specs are effective), Sin/Sub Rogue

High Tier
Ele Shaman, Frost Mage, Feral-Resto Druid, Warlock(All specs are effective)

Mid Tier
Arms Warrior, Disc/Shadow Priest, Other Mages, Enh Shaman, Ret/holy/Prot Paladins, Boomkin

Low Tier
Holy Priests, Other Warriors, Resto Shaman, Combat Rogues,

PvE:
Top TIer
Prot/Fury Warrior, Holy Paladin

High Tier
Holy/Disc Priest, Combat Rogue, Fire/Frost Mage, Resto Shaman

Mid Tier
Warlocks, Resto Druid, Bear Druid, Marks/Surv Hunter,

Low Tier
Other Rogues, Arms Warrior, Enc/Ele SHaman, Boomkin, BM Hunter, Cat Druid, Shadow Priest, Ret/Prot Pally

This is my opinion… and It was really hard to almost impossible to try to factor in all situations… but I tried.
As far as tiers, especially with PvP MOST specs have a good utility in pvp and can be effective. Just some specs/classes have harsher counter classes than others, but everything Mid tier and above excels at a certian match-up.

That. and a few more words because of a really dumb post rule.

Mage and warrior are the strongest classes at 60. If you include 1-59, hunter could potentially join them.

Your class in classic is what you make of it, unlike in the modern game where everything is fixed and determined for you.

At 60 everyone is useful and unique. So there are no “bottom of the barrel” classes, only bottom of the barrel players. I suggest you pick a class whose play-style you enjoy and make the most of it.

Your question is skewed because every level of player will have a different opinion and level of skill with which they are able to play different classes in situations. PvE is relatively easy and straight forward and quick to rank HOWEVER.

In pvp, this goes on personal level of skill and how to cope with stressful situations and how well your brain processes things. In vanilla I played PoM frost and Arms warrior. I distinctly remember having days where I could go 1v5 and others where I couldnt seem to kill anybody depending on my internal composure and how pissed/stressed/tired i was while PvPing.

Don’t forget to rank them all by race as well, for a glorious 120+ options!

1.12 was the longest individual patch in vanilla. The most players played it. It was the most complete version of vanilla.

Silly title.

That’s a great list.
I’d like to add that ‘Just because you are not top tier does not mean you won’t be able to play’. If you really want to play a shadow priest or feral druid, go for it.

We are all a lot more familiar with WoW now, and I think that will be able to find a guild. In a 40 man raid, I think that you will be able to find a spot.

I know from my raiding experience, that our team would always take person with less DPS who showed up 100% of the time and never stood in the fire over the top DPS who showed up half the time.

No I 100% agree.

I even intended to have a bottom tier, but I actually couldn’t think to put any spec in it.

So many people overestimate dps and underestimate utility, the average raid blows the dps check way out of the water now days. And all dps specs are capable of making the dps check limit.

A lot of the time I wouldn’t mind having an extra innervate, moonkin aura, leader of the pack, imp windfury(Or totems in general), BoP, LoH, bubble, reincarnate… regardless of spec

Good player that shows up on a consistent time>>>> Meta-class specs… in any case.
