You apparently misled yourself. Pathfinder has been all but a guarantee every time. What made you think it was going away?
Flying has been in the game since 2007. It was NEVER a problem until Blizzard made it a problem.

Well Pathfinder came after 4 expansions with flight done correctly there was always hope. Have to say I agree with the OP. No pre-purchase and I’m unsubbing at launch (or as close as I can, I’ll play out my last month in BfA if I have to). I’ll probably pick it up later, but not until 6 weeks before the patch that has the final Pathfinder bit. I swear, somebody at Square Enix must keep poking Ion about flying in order to pick up the ones who can’t stand it. I know that’s where my game dollars are going to be for awhile. And that’s a big deal, since I’m going to spend actual dollars, and not blizz bucks.

Or to peeve more of their customer base off and have them leave. Vocal minority on forums doesn’t equate to those who actually left that were peeved off. They didn’t come here to vent they just silently left.
WoD had all kinds of problems 5.6 Million people left. They didn’t come here to vent! They just left and Blizzard NEVER got them back.
Sadly that still rewards them for being jerks about it. Best thing to do is what you suggested before unsub, go to a new game and leave Blizzard sweating that you might return when Part 2 of Flying happens.
I’ve talked with a lot of old guildmates and friends, once they got committed into a new game; they didn’t give Blizzard a second thought and that should worry them.
I have tried the other MMO they went to, it’s a little overwhelming for me personally trying to learn everything about it. That being said many that actually thought enough to email in real life after Blizzard’s current announcements suggested buy a boost so I can join them and they can show me everything. As they said the money you’d be giving Blizzard can be invested to free your soul. 
TLDR: My concern isn’t so much with Pathfinder, I suspect Ion plans to leave the whole game without Flight for a year or more. When every expansion is tied to Shadowlands - I suspect they won’t LET you fly anywhere until you get Shadowlands Pathfinder.

wod had a different player base then today.this player base will whine and complain and still buy mounts from the store.
I’m from Classic Era and I have never bought a single mount from the store.
Like I told them back in Warlords. They got away with the sales of it because the player base had trust in Blizzard and the good will their customers gave them; left them with the leeway to hang themselves.
They’ve fallen on their own swords with what went on in Warlords; the trust people had in Blizzard is gone & so is the good will their customer base gave freely to them.

No flying does not equal Pathfinder
Pathfinder is no flying in first half of expansion, then flying enabled compromise between flying throughout and no flying at all.
I was afraid that Blizzard was going to try the no more flying ever route in Shadowlands as it looks like the zones are separate areas like Argus.
Now the choice is whether or not to buy it before flying is enabled. I didn’t with BFA but will have flying within the week.
Let’s be honest, we both know you will buy the next expansion and this is just grand standing.

Ya honestly, if this is your reaction to something that was obviously going to continue, its probably time to take a breather just for your own sake!
If you look at the core world content that was required for BFA pathfinder as “mindless stupid stuff” only there to unlock flying, then you are missed by the basic building blocks of what this game is.
Obviously you can still enjoy it your own way, but if such a core part of the game wasn’t appealing to me anymore I would likely need to step away myself.
I wish they had a more creative solution to keep flying in the game without it ruining so much of the early exploration and world building but they aren’t interested in that so this is the best compromise we can get.
For anyone who doesn’t understand, I think its best to play Classic for any given time and you’ll see things more clearly.
Flying is unhealthy for world content, but its a nice way to eventually nerf the parts of the game that become a bit outdated half way through.
Only way I could see it getting even better is if they had flying enabled after each following patch for only said zones.
So 8.2 enabled flying for 8.0 content, and 8.3 enabled it for 8.2 etc.

Same OP. It appears from the Q&A that they are continuing with Pathfinder. I won’t be buying or playing this expansion. On a positive note I’m looking forward to the possibility of TBC where flying truly shines as everything it was meant to be.

Run around on the ground like every other game. They don’t want you to fly. They didn’t pre bc either. Flying is a gift for you for spending a lot of time on the game to make it easier to level alts. Holy. Crybaby. Batman.

Seriously, it sucks balls.
Let us unlock flying with gold upon reaching level 60.
For those that don’t want to fly, all they need to do is either not unlock flying or if they already have, enable WARMODE from a capital city to return to being grounded. Flying should never be permitted when you have your flag up.
This would do so much to appeal to both pro-fliers and World PvP’ers.

So, admittedly, I stopped reading replies after this. If I’m echoing something someone else said, apologies.
Is it really a timesink? If you’re playing current content, Pathfinder kind of unlocks organically. I’ve never had to grind a Pathfinder achievement. It just happens as I’m progressing my main.
Free handouts isn’t meaningful progression.
LMAO hahaha. You do realizes almost ALL the other main stream mmos don’t have flying at all right? So of course they won’t have pathfinder.
