I’m aware that I might run into toxic people no matter what, but I’d appreciate opinions regardless! I’m also not averse to being on a heavily-skewed server (ie. high % Alliance or Horde) or servers like Moon Guard and Emerald Dream! Thank you!

I can give you advise about Classic servers, but retail servers? No, it doesn’t matter what faction you are, or which server you on, the community on retail is just horrible.
Best advice I can give though, stay away from the mega servers if you don’t want “toxicity”. Most realms are pretty quiet, but places like Area 52, Illidan or Kel’thuzad are filled with man-children that still think spamming Thunderfury is hilarious.
I main on Illidan Horde. My pally does. It is the nicest most polite and easy going realm in all of WoW. Should make an Ally toon and come over. Illidan. You have level 80s or your friends do too? Bring them.
I’ve recently started running around on Thrall instead of Area 52 (denser horde pop, not server toxicity) and haven’t seen anyone just being a donkey in chat.

That literally never gets spammed in trade in retail anymore and especially not on any of those realms. Illidan has good Horde and Ally guilds. No one even speaks a single word of English on Illidan Horde trade chat ever. Quit making stuff up. Do you play retail or are you going off of what you heard from someone else?

I still remember this “vaunted” classic community mass reporting any new player that popped into existence for the first time on a free boosted DK during the wrath classic promo event. Judging by the reddit and forum posts at the time, there were at least a dozen or more people who got muted for simply existing. Others got baited into saying stupid stuff in response to a bunch of instigators and so got themselves suspended for it.
SMH.
Every server has bad apples, but you have the tools to prune those out.
I really enjoy the folks I hang with on WrA.
I mean, I myself have a character on Illidan, but that was more to help get a new guild off the ground than anything else. Past that? Yeah, I don’t even pay attention to the chat on that server as I’m more focused on guild and community chat. Plus, if we’re REALLY being honest on the matter, then you’re going to run into Thunderfury clowns on EVERY server.
Seriously, go try it. Pick a random server at peak hours. I’m willing to bet you’ll get a bite on Thunderfury. It’s not just exclusive to Illidan.
To the OP: as far as Retail goes, I feel that it’s less about what server you’re on nowadays and more of a matter of just finding folks you get along with. Do keep in mind that guilds are fully cross server now, and while there are some minor issues with the guild bank cross server, they aren’t generally a major hurdle. Also bear in mind that guilds are cross faction.
As reagents and most consumables on the AH are region wide now, even that is generally not a major factor in picking a server nowadays. As far as picking a server goes, I feel there are only really two factors in play now, possibly three:
- Is the server busy at the time you like to play?
- Does the server have a strong AH economy in regards to items that are server locked? (bags, equipment, etc.)
- Do your friends play on that server? (less of an issue now with so much cross server, but there might still be moments where you’d prefer to all be on the same server)
All that said, the server is still going to determine who exactly you see out in the world in current expansion content and in cities when you’re rolling solo, so that could be a factor as well. Honestly, I’d say just float around a bit and do some research on servers you might be interested in. From there, start looking into guilds that fit whatever it is you’d be looking for, even if those guilds are on a different server.

I raided on Illidan in Legion, and while trade chat was filled with chinese bots basically, outside of trade was pretty bad on the horde side. Loads of pretentious folks, reminded me of KT a lot.
I play on Wild Growth both Alliance and Horde, and there’s not too much chat going on with either faction. Now if you really want to go into who’s worse, look no further than Moon Guard (Alliance). I main toons on that realm, and trade is nothing short of debauchery and cringe.
I do admit, I don’t know much about Area 52 and Stormrage, that’s just from word of mouth, but the rest is from experience.

But it’s not indicative of the community there. MG is not its weirdo trade chat. That’s like calling MG only the Goldshire Inn.

Never met a classic community I thought was good tbh.
Fizzcrank is a low pop server but I’d say that the few guilds there aren’t that toxic. They are SUPER casual though.
I could give you a server but it is low population and that is probably what makes it less toxic
Illidan usually has the best players in the world on that realm from time to time. That one almost always shows as world top number 1 realm.
Faction does not matter a whole lot in retail. But you can still get a slight bit of a benefit from choosing the right one. Warriors from Above is an Ally made guild there on Illidan. I think I forgot to mention that one. Been around for a very long time.

That is them OP could try to join I guess. I have an inactive toon in there. I keep lying to them and telling them that I am coming back to play but I never do.
I’m on Moonrunner… have been since the beginning. It’s not as toxic as others. I have a few toons scattered throughout on other servers…yeah, Moonrunner is ok.
I have several toons on Azgalor, new player server… extremely toxic. I was waiting for my husband to finish something…a quest or something, I can’t remember…I just remember reading through the chat. It was awful. Things that get you banned.
