In Game Lag

Hello,
For roughly the past 6-8 weeks I have been getting sporadic in game lag in WoW retail. This includes:

  1. Taking minutes to open up the dialog screen when right clicking on an NPC.
  2. When in a dungeon, the background gameplay freezes, where everybody in my party just runs on the spot, and everything stops doing actions. It’s only when I move, or cast a different spell does my animation and the background gameplay update and start moving again. But straight after that, it freezes in the same fashion again.

I have no issues in any other games. I run a wired connection. My in game ping is usually 21ms, except at times when this issue is happening, the home latency spikes to 200-1200 ms, while the other world latency stays at 20ms. There are no other people using my internet while this issue is happening.

To get around this issue I have made a simple /reload macro, which when it finishes reloading usually opens up the NPC dialog. It’s quite annoying because handing in 5 quests means I need to press that button and reload the UI 5 times just to talk to them. As for the 2nd issue, I just have to constantly move and jump around because if I stop, the gameplay stops.

I’ve tried searching the forums for potential fixes but all have come up empty. I have tried to reinstall the game. I have reset my UI and removed all mods. I downloaded and tried WinMTR, but if I’m interpreting the numbers correctly, it says I’m getting 0% packet loss. I have played recently on Frostmourne and Khaz’goroth and the issue is on both.

I’m now lost and don’t know how to fix the issue. Appreciate any help that can be provided.

Hey there Dreadg!

Thank you for taking the time to reach out with those details. Let’s go ahead and have you run a fresh WinMTR network test while the problem occurs in-game to catch any potential network-related issues between your computer and the game server. Here are the instructions:

  1. Download the tool from this page
  2. Enter the game IP into the “host” field. The IP address for our games are listed on the WinMTR instructions page
  3. Start the test and play the game for at least 15 minutes. Ensure the problem happens while the WinMTR tool is running.
  4. After recording the problem data, click “export text” and save the WinMTR file in an easy to find location.
  5. Once you have that made, open the file. You’ll need to copy and paste the contents of the Text document into the post, and put four Tilde (~) marks above the WinMTR. It’ll look like this:

Dreadg,

Was the problem actively happening when you ran this test? I see no issues with this test. If the problem was happening when you ran this test, it may just be desyncs caused by a corrupted UI. Try uninstalling any addon managers (twitch, tukui client, raider.io, etc) and reset your ui.

If you didn’t catch the problem while this winMTR was running, let’s re run it and make sure you catch some of the bad game behavior so we can give it another look.

Hey,
So I removed twitch and reset my UI. It seemed to reduce the amount of occurences but were still present. Note that I was only doing questing. Today I jumped into a dungeon and the issue of everyone running on the spot until I move or cast or something was still present.

Dreadg,

If this was still happening despite your UI being reset and this is your winMTR output, we’re going to need more information than we can safely collect on the forums to figure this out. Let’s have you submit a ticket here for further help. make sure to attach an MSInfo file, let the agents know what you’ve already done and link this thread.

Hey there, there was one more thing I thought I’d try before I submitted a ticket, and sure enough it worked!

I had been using the default modem supplied to me by my ISP. I decided to upgrade it to a d Link modem. Ever since I did that, my issue has gone away. Just a heads up in case anyone is having a similar problem that I was having!

Thanks for the help anyway

Thanks for the update, Dreadg! Glad to hear its fixed up now

Hi there, I’m having a similar problem.
