You want someone to watch to make sure the volunteers don’t abuse their powers. Those people will need to be paid. Unless we’re gonna have volunteers watching volunteers who in turn have to watch more volunteers.
$8760/month for 24/7 moderation. That’s reasonably able to be split across 3-5 servers, for a cost of 1-5% of the monthly subs for those servers. That’s hardly cost-prohibitive.
I agree that’s part of the problem - because it increases anonymity - but the problem exists in Classic as well.
If 1 cent of my subscription went to speech moderation, I would instantly unsubscribe.
I remember when Blizzard tried active moderation on Moon Guard. The endeavor didn’t even last a month.
You aren’t taking into account the amount of money they will lose when they start banning people for saying things you feel are offensive…
And then those who would leave because extreme chat moderation drives people away and reduces communication.
I can’t imagine not logging into a game that I otherwise have the desire to play because of what people say in a chat channel.
Also, nobody really uses lfg chat. Just sign up for premade groups no chat needed. Leave the channel if you don’t like what you see.
Yes, but clearly that cost is lower since they don’t need to be present 24/7, and 24/7 moderation is already ~1-5% of the subscription income.
Could you give examples?
For me, if its racist, homophobic … awful things like that, I report. Other wise, let ppl be. Someone is always offended about something. You can’t please everyone. Freedom of speech.
Not without getting banned myself.
Make a toon on Tichondrius. Go into Torghast General chat or LookingForGroup, and you’ll see plenty of examples.
I would not play a game that does not have reasonable policies. I also don’t advocate leaving chat.
Just pitch in to the extent Blizzard requests. Don’t make it a crusade, but do throw in a report now and again if you see a violation that also exemplifies the sort of server culture you don’t want to see.
People who withdraw from their neighborhoods are just leaving the door open.
I have a few accounts and have played on tich for years. I might be one of the ppl you’re referring to Tich is home and i rarely see something awful (to me). I only report what I said previously.
I wouldn’t trust half these Martians that play WOW to watch astro turf grow let alone give a single one the power to determine if what I said hurt their poor delicate sensibilities. No thank you. Use ignore…run out of room use Badboy add on.
edit Lunch times over back to work but good luck to you. The forums aren’t much better of a cesspool that game chat. We all slither down here.
I do. It’s getting worse, not better. Hence why I’m here. Because I love the game and don’t want to be driven away from it.
People who say to close chat forget that this is an MMO. I want to play with other people. This isn’t a single-player game, and playing it that way gets boring, fast.
LFG isn’t even a default channel anymore. You have to purposely join it. I’m not sure why you would turn in and then complain about it. Just turn it off.
If turning off chat isn’t an option the BadBoy addon will go a long way to solving things.
Classic exists, and LFG chat is very important there. But you’re kind of proving my point that the chat in game is so toxic that it’s driving people away.
Leave trade chat. ez clap.
You are literally the 1st person I have ever heard of that is being driven away by what people say in chat channels.
Most of us are mature enough to either let people talk or leave the channel instead of asking for Big Pappa Blizz to fix our social problems.
I hear FF14 is heavily moderated. That might be what you are looking for.
Well, I will also say that what the overall server deems reasonable may not match up with your idea of a community you wish to be in.
I’d server transfer in that case.
Think of your server chat, if you can’t effect change over time, as a community you don’t share values with. For what ever reason, the majority of your server is okay with it. So walk away, and find a community that doesn’t leave you in despair.
I know many people who have quit the game because of it.
I’m a live and let live kind of person. I’m only here because the problem has grown quite severe. Leaving chat is not a viable solution in a social game.
I mean… that is the option here. I can unsub. I love the game and don’t want to, but if things continue the way they’re going, that will happen.
I already don’t play Retail because of it.
