In-game chat desperately needs moderation

Can agree on that one.

Agreed. It’s amazing to me that a generation of kids who grew up on south park and family guy are the crybabies who want to censor everyone these days. It’s a chat channel. Either report them or put them on ignore. Simple .

At least 241 in the US. Could be the same or even more for EU. Not sure for other regions like Asia. You gotta add more than the exact amount because they will want a bit more extras to cover for people calling in sick and taking vacation because Blizzard isn’t going to be a company to not offer that kind of benefit to a full time job position.

There would be major stress and fatigue of just sitting there watching chat go by trying to catch everything when there is like thousands of people posting stuff almost every 2-3 seconds, then having to stop the chat while people are still posting to consider what may have been said is something they would need to silence someone for and then try and play catch up.

Personally, I believe people don’t think about the logistics like this and say. “Oh I can do that!”, but I challenge someone to sit there for 7 hours with 1 hour lunch break to just sit there to watch the chat and then capture everything that was said and pick what is considered toxic or inappropriate and tell me that this is something they can do this for 5 days a week.

Oh there are, but why use the means provided to you to fix your own problem when instead you can come to forums and demand everything be silenced that you disagree with?

I think most engage with the trolls and get triggered. Happened to me once, I learned that dropping into the gutter to debate only gets you dirty. Just report and move on… that’s my take.

That is exactly what Blizzard does with their games. You are free to say what you want in the game unless they have some kind of filter on things that cannot be said which I believe there isn’t on chat, but only with creating character names, but someone can say something very toxic, inappropriate, or offensive, but Blizzard holds the right to remove you from their game. The right to saying what you said, but the Terms of Use does state that Blizzard holds that right to remove you from the game if they need to.

That logic is like saying. Well there is a profanity filter! That is what it there for right? No. It is not. The profanity filter is there mostly to block out anything that could be considered offensive or inappropriate because there are kids that play the game or even watch their parents play the game and may not want their kids to be exposed to that kind of language while watching or playing.

Is “offensive” and/or “inappropriate” not the complaint then?

Unfollow the chat.

You have this backwards, but sure.

I’m going to tell you the same thing I told Tulnn in one of his many, many posts: World of Warcraft does not need more moderation; it needs more power in the hands of the individual player.

Give the player a text filter where they do not see any posts containing certain words, or only see posts containing certain words. That is really the only way this will (and should) work.

What server is this guy on that his chat has anything other than advertisements for carries?

There is/was an add on for that…badboy iirc? If it’s not still around, I’m sure there is one to take it’s place.

I am not sure what you mean.

Seriously? Ignore them and move on! It’s surprising to me that so many are offended here and think they have some right not to be. I understand it dampens your game experience but it’s easily fixed by the ignore and reporting systems in-game plus you can leave a lot of channels in-game also.

I think it’s more they are looking for instant actions to be taken. Some feel that when you use the report feature, nothing is really being done about it and putting them on ignore is like putting a band-aid over your ears to filter only them out, but it is still allowing them to continue be toxic which is not exactly fixing the problem till Blizzard steps in and reviews the report which could be well after they are done saying what they needed or wanted to say.

It get both view points, but I do agree that people do just need to use the ignore and report feature that is given and move on.

That’s a very subjective thing in this game.

You can leave any chat at any time, and rejoin it at any time

If you’re super sensitive to toxicity I suggest leaving chat at all times unless you need it. Get in, get what you need, get out

I actually play the game so I don’t spend a lot of time using WoW as a “chat service”

I’m on a small server and we don’t have big server problems when it comes to socialization or chatting. At least not as much as OP apparently seems to have

What is the difference?

A player that doesn’t want to see profanity turns on the filter and it removes the profanity without restricting communication.

Your statement only makes sense if your goal is to restrict communication…which is what I am starting to believe is what this thread is all about.

Everyone keeps pointing out all the tools available to the OP, but they keep brushing it off and saying “its not enough”.

You cannot speak if you do not agree with me!!!
It’s only logical :woman_shrugging:

/leave Trade
/leave General

It’s that easy.

It isn’t enough that OP can ignore and block the chat, they want to be sure no one else reading chat can see what X person said because “their words are dangerous.” It’s not even enough if that person was perm-muted, OP wouldn’t be happy until that player is never allowed in WoW again.

Imagine I owned a Pizza joint and someone stood outside my door all day telling the outside world my Pizza is gross and made them sick. I could shut the blinds and sit in my office to not witness a thing, but in my mind I would still know that person it outside my door telling other people stuff I wouldn’t want them to hear. So I call the cops and get them near instantly removed so no one has to hear their toxic lies, conspiracies, opinions, truth, or anything I perceive dangerous to the thing I’m protecting. (my business) Then I hire staff by the door to vet people on their way out making sure if their Pizza tasted good and have them mouth duct taped + escorted to their car if they say otherwise before anyone else can overhear.

This hypothetical scenario explains the reason OP doesn’t believe clicking “Ignore” + Report is sufficient enough. Also should paint an image of why heavy moderation isn’t healthy for the game. Chat in game is dead enough already - But hey there was a time not too long ago strangers in /2 gave me solid car repair advice. I would have been annoyed at the time had I asked my car question and a self important volunteer mod deleted my text, muted me and said “THIS IS OFF TOPIC” …okay

With all the trash talk or toxic talk in social media in general. I think they should just give up on moderation and let it be. It’s a part of our culture now, to late. Monitor yourself and your family and leave everyone else to do their thing.

It is ridiculous that in game chat can go the way it does but the forums are monitored to a degree that makes it feel like kindergarten. Just give up Blizzard.
