Add the words you don’t want to see and any reply that contains those words is not shown in your chat. That way you can still see swearing if you want but you can target political or sexual chat in particular.
You as the user gets to decide what you do and don’t see. Something I think is far better then one rule for all.
Please no. There is nothing worse than overmoderating chat channels for no reason. Theres very little in global channels that really require you to put someone on ignore.
Here’s a hint: use the ignore feature in your brain. You dont need to respond to everything. Let people enjoy mrrraazzzz in peace.
So… I’m right, but we shouldn’t do anything about it because it’s always been that way (except, as you say, it’s even worse now)?
I do. The problem exists in Classic as well.
You and many others keep creating this strawman notion that I’m complaining about general meaningless banter, or that specific words are being used. I’m not.
I’m talking about the kind of discussion that makes you disgusted with humanity, lose faith in it, and generally so exhausting and dehumanizing that all enjoyment and fun is removed from the game and you no longer want to even associate with it.
It’s entirely possible you can have “discussions” such as that without ever once using a “taboo” word. It doesn’t mean it belongs or is right. People having discussions about how it’s okay and right to traffic in humans because certain humans aren’t worthy of the same sort of rights the rest of us enjoy need to take their garbage out of the game.
The vast majority of people playing games do so to escape from the world. Bringing all the garbage of the world into the game removes that escape and removes all enjoyment of the game.
Leaving chat is not an option in a social game, let alone when the chat has a very specific purpose. I would argue that moderation should include telling people to take trade chat to the trade channel and not spam LFG with it, for example.
And there should be a World chat for general chat. Most (Classic) servers have an unofficial World chat for this reason, but because it’s unofficial, it’s always at the mercy of a troll who sets a password and kicks everyone out so that it cannot be used until they log out.
But even the world chat shouldn’t be a haven for white supremacists and racists to have casual discussions around why a black person’s life is worth less than a white person’s, even though they never use prohibited words.
Like i said, use the ignore function in your brain. When you ask for moderation you run the risk of getting the same level moderation thats on the forums which will mean 0 banter, 0 trolling, 0 bsing.
That’s not a risk I’m willing to take because you dont feel like using the report button and your internal ignore system.
I 100% agree with you on it being moderation and guess one. It is… by the everyone including you. That is why the Devs gave us all the report and ignore feature. So Blizzard doesn’t need to hire several people to sit there all there watching the chat to shut them up if they are being toxic. Blizzard leaves that role and power to the people who are playing the game. If you don’t want to see their chat, put them on ignore. If they are saying something inappropriate or whatever you don’t like. Report it.
Now I know what you may now say… “This doesn’t stop it from happening immediately.” Well yeah because nothing is instantly done and even if they did have people watching the chat, chances are it won’t instantly be done that way as well. If you want something instantly done, that ignore feature does that for you.
The whole thing with freedom of speech in Wow needs to go out the window because that does not apply in video games because Blizzard has the right to still go in and remove you from the game for whatever you say because it is their game and they have rules that you agree to when you sign up for the account and if you don’t follow them, they can remove you. Trust me, take them to court over this if you want people, you will lose that war because that right of freedom of speech in the game is left at the door when you sign into your character.
if anything, my stance is anti-blizzard on this subject…
?
gee, i don’t know.
probably because you said that you aren’t aware of the rules, and questioned whether discussion of body parts was appropriate.
i almost cut myself on that edge.
trade chat isn’t your personal chat channel.
it’s a public channel.
it’s not named Ragnok chat.
people who want to use the channel for its intended purpose, shouldn’t need to leave or waste slots on their ignore list, just because nobody is willing to enter into a private chat channel with you.
so join a guild.
who is “we”?
…and you sure don’t seem like someone who has an open mind and is willing to consider alternate viewpoints… the fact that you’ve resulted to personal attacks is a pretty good indicator of this.
You’re about to learn a thing.
Let’s see how receptive you are to it.
You’ve agreed to not use mature language.
The fact that a filter exists, doesn’t negate the agreement you made.
You are right that the report system constitutes moderation in a sense.
However, the moderation that I would love to see, is someone being able to say in the chat “hey guys, cool this down, it’s not appropriate for the channel”, and have people be able to say “yeah, you’re right, my bad” and stop, without any further action being required.
This, to me, would cover the vast majority of cases where people crossed a line but weren’t really intending to.
I’d reserve the bans/silences for people who refuse to follow the standard of acceptable discourse in that channel. And that we do not get from a report feature.
back in ye olden days of TBC, this would happen when things started to get overly wild.
…but the world has changed, and this probably can’t be done in todays world because of “reasons”.
i also think that some people in this thread are getting a bit confused by what is being discussed here.
i don’t have too much of an issue with bored people resorting to chit-chat.
what i take issue with, is people thinking they’re hilarious when they “joke” about things like vile assaults on children.
I think we’re generally in agreement. I don’t think that having moderation can’t be done. Hell, there could simply be a report option that requests a GM pay attention to the chat.
Basically “Report->Request GM”. Then a GM can watch the chat for anything problematic and address as appropriate. No 24/7 monitoring required, just… the existence of a response team.
blizz obviously knows which realms have the most reports for “bad” chat in /2
they know the hours when the bulk of reports are generated.
…but every time the idea of GMs being active in trade chat, people get all uppity and say stuff like:
“do you know how many realms there are?”
“do you know how much it would cost to employ people to watch the chat for every realm 24/7?”
…i mean… the chat isn’t scrolling at a constant reading speed on most realms.
and it’s not as if it would require an individual for each realm around the clock.
just a simple pop the head in, check people are behaving in an acceptable manner… and maybe take out a few gold spammers while they’re there, and then move on to the next problematic realm.
if people know that there is a chance that this could happen, they’d possibly start to think about hitting the enter key when they know they’re saying things they shouldn’t.
All the posters who are saying stuff like “you’re a jerk if you want to report people” or “use ignore or get an addon to hide stuff” or “leave the channel” or any of these other pathetic responses… these are the people who are scared of being reported, and it’s in their own best interest to discourage reports.
Imagination is the only way that’s going to be achieved. Blizzard already culls staff like crazy. There’s no realistic expectation that they’ll pay for chat mods.
I bet if Blizzard offered players free game time they would moderate LFG for basically free.
Would have to have a caveat of if you abuse your power you lose you account.
