Improving my idea with collaboration and roleplay

I fully plan on expanding and improving the story I’ve written. Give my character more depth. Give him more of a backstory. Explore his past a little more. Show how he relates to the WoW characters. I’d like to thank Kalrah and Shalnir for suggesting roleplay. And no trolls and naysayers allowed. I need to work in a friendly non-toxic environment.

We don’t need an announcement, mate, lol. Just join one of the roleplays.
See ya on the playing field  Glad to have you.

I read your story, I think it’s good. But he definitely needs more depth… and maybe next time don’t use existing NPC characters for your story, you seriously break lore when you do it. Like, you can include something like “Jaina even winked at him a couple of times,” but a full on relationship? When she was already in a relationship? You still have to respect lore when RPing.

Anyway, if you want to have more roleplay, just make some open roleplay threads and I will probably participate in them. Or you could participate in pre-existing ones, like this one.

That’s why I’m here. Give it more depth. Expand upon it. Also, anyone would tell you not to tell anyone that they can’t put NPCs into their roleplay.

Actually most people will tell you that you shouldn’t. Outside of putting your character on a pedestal and making them more important than they likely are in world, the big problem with linking yourself to major NPC characters is that they are written and owned by someone else.

Writing the canon actions of a character that is not your own is very frowned upon in most RP circles.

To put it in another context, would you be ok with another person taking your character and writing them in situations you
A: Have no control over,
B: Wouldn’t approve of,
C: Would be out of character for said character?

That is one of the biggest reasons why it is looked on as so taboo to RP with character ties like that. In doing so, at best you are drastically reducing your pool of available partners, At worst you would be actively driving them away, and it’s something you don’t even need to do really.

With just a few tweaks you could very easily make an NPC in your backstory that is very similar to Jaina in all but name and status and remove the problem.

I’m happy you are looking to RP and use it to expand upon your character, its a wonderful way to find out things about them that you would never have even thought of. There is however a certain decorum that you should abide by if you want people to RP with you.

Hehe good point. That was just advice… you can do what you want. But see Rayha’s post above, this is good advice.

I’m not doing any tweaks. At least, I’m not taking any NPCs out of my story. If people frown upon this, that’s their problem.

I acknowledge your advice, just as you acknowledge my choices.

That is indeed their problem and you are well within your right to tell the story you decide to tell. Fan fiction is a personal interpretation of another stories events, I myself have outlined a few snippets around Jaina being put on trial alongside Garrosh at the tail end of MoP.

But others are under no obligation to acknowledge or accept anything I write, nor do I have the right to claim anything that I did write was canon. Nor would it ever become canon (especially retroactively) as the characters involved are not my intellectual property. It would also limit my choice of RP partners drastically if I chose to force that story on other people.

I merely caution you on limiting your pool of RP interaction, and would suggest you temper your expectation of what your character growth will go to accomplish.

Edit" to answer your question from the RP thread you joined (without cluttering it with my response) The way an RP thread like that goes is you read through the story and posts of the other players and write a small snippet in first or third person roleplaying your character in the scenario. As the story progresses (generally once all the participants have had an opportunity to write their response post) you post again in character reacting to how the story has changed by the actions of the other posters since you last post.

It doesn’t have to be a long post but should include any reactions to conversations that your character is a part of, and any combat related actions that you are taking along with responding to combat actions against you.

A couple basic guidelines to help,
1: Never control another persons character without their permission. this is a huge taboo and will get you removed from the RP
2: Try and portray yourself at around the same levels of power as the other characters in the RP, everyone gets their own turn at the spotlight and no one should hog it.
3: For combat, you should leave the conclusions of your attacks up in the air most of the time to allow for responses from the people that are playing the things you are in combat with unless you are controlling that thing yourself.

Example if i were fighting your character i would send a fireball sailing towards you but leave it up you to say how you react, if it lands, what effect it has on you, etc,

If I’m controlling the creature I’m attacking (Some threads let you “Spawn your own enemies to highlight your abilities without just overcoming the main threat” then I could write that creatures reaction myself without leaving it up in the air unless I want to have the creature try and hit another player, then see above.

If a fireball was hurled at him, Cameron McKnight would use his shield to block it. Because, as the Warrior I made him into, he carries a shield at all times. However, he can’t block every attack thrown at him, as that would be lazy writing. People get into fights, they both get hurt. That’s just how it works.

You would be surprised by how many people don’t understand that, but regardless it was simply an example. Read through the rp threads replies thus far and write your own in either first or third person and go from there.

Anyway, off topic a little, but how many Cam alts do you even have lol

In the game, I have 15, soon to have a 16th. It seems here on the forums, I have six.

That is… insane.

I just thought of something to alter in my story. That part were Jaina finds Cameron sitting on a bench feeling sad because he’s having a bad day? Actually, I’ve decided to make him sad because that day marked the anniversary of his parents’ deaths. While talking to Cameron, Jaina shows empathy, saying that people lose their families all the time in wars, and she should know, as she lost her father. She also states that “we all have our ghosts”.
