Improved Sanctuary Rune

Now that we have moved raiding into massive percentage increases that scale specifically off base stats and damage has scaled up higher and higher to accommodate this, the Improved Sancturary Rune for prot paladins needs to be looked at. Sanctuary was already a pretty terrible buff being that it was a reduction of flat damage at a low value, but now as a tank being hit for 11-12k and having Imp Sanc reducing that by only 84 damage there’s a serious problem with that.

It should probably change it from 100% increased reduction to “Now Reduces damage taken by 3%” or something.

That’s a buff to Naxx but a nerf to every other content so it’s a bit tricky.

I think a better solution would simply be add an extra tag on it such as…

“If under an effect that increases Health by a %, also reduce damage taken by 3%”

I wish consec was baseline to pally. The idea of prot pally without consec is just silly.

Honestly, I agree with this 100%.

11 Points into Holy should have been Improved Consecration which would reduce the mana cost by 25% and slow enemies inside by 20%.

Should have been baseline in SoD at 20.

Heck, Hallowed Ground could have improved on it as well making the 200% Damage into Healing also reduce movement speed slowed by an additional 10%.

The flat damage reduction from the Blessing isn’t even applied evenly to everything. It’s an up to formula and won’t reduce damage to 0. It’s a LOT worse than you think and being percentage based would be a buff in nearly every raid tier and most other areas too.

I wish that Consecration had any value at all in SoD. Paladin snap threat for aoe is garbage, warriors are now the kings of aoe threat with thunderclap and shockwave.

Wait wait wait, warriors are king of aoe threat??? Do tell

I’m really excited to see what Blizzard does with class reworks in Classic+. There’s so many changes that need to be baked into these core specs.

What about changing it completely…

Imp. Sanc. Rune:

  • Every time you block, your shield pulses with Holy light, dealing Holy damage equal to you block value.
  • Damage causes double the threat, and is affected by Righteous Fury

Current Paladin “AOE” threat

Consecration - Low damage, terrible scaling, doesn’t do any snap threat, has zero prot bonuses for damage or threat, deals damage over time, not even considered for most raid tank specs.

Holy Shield / Sanc - Requires blocking, so only works when you already have threat.

Avenger’s Shield - Locked to three targets, long cd

Hammer of the Righteous - Locked to three targets

Warrior aoe threat:

Shockwave - Not target capped, instant damage, applies a stun, large threat generation immediately, long cooldown with a set bonus to reduce it by half.

Thunderclap - Instant damage, 10 target cap, no cooldown with set bonus, double damage and a 50% threat modifier on rune, spammable mass aoe snap threat.

Warriors have so much better snap and sustained aoe threat because their aoe threat got rune and set bonus support while paladins got nothing for snap threat. On pull the warrior gets the threat immediately and keeps it. The paladin has to sit there and politely ask the group not to touch anything for several seconds.

Shaman probably have a better time with it on Horde, but I don’t tank on my shaman.

It already has holy damage on block that scales off block value now, and holy damage is affected by righteous fury.
