I can’t figure this ability out. When am I supposed use Implosion and explode the imps on the target? Most of time I find I simply just don’t ever use it.
(I know I’m a ‘Pally’, but for whatever reason it’s not letting me change characters to my lock right now)
When I did play demo I would send em all in after my tyrant wore off if it’s 2+ mobs but otherwise I just leave the little things up.
I’m not the best at demo though…
I’ve been using it as a sort of execute.

I will create a simplified explanation for the sake of convenience, there are some aspects of this explanation who are not quite correct, but its for the sake of applying the knowledge of implosion and not to explain the gritty details of the spell.
Imagine Implosion is an ability who converts the value of a Wild Imp to AOE, now with this concept you have the following conclusions.
- In Single Target, Imploding and not Imploding will deal similar amounts of damage, the difference is that in case of Imploding you had to press 1 additional button and trigger 1 additional GCD, meaning its lower DPS to Implode.
- In 2 targets, it means you applied the value of a Wild Imps in 2 targets, this means with 1 additional button you transformed the damage a imp would generally deal to a target, in similar damage it deals to 2 targets, as such, a dps gain.
- As you have more and more targets, implosion becomes more and more powerfull.
But do note that Implosion can implode as many imps as you have active, if you have 1 imp it will implode 1 imp, if you have 3 imps it will implode 3 imps, if you have 6 imps it will implode 6 imps and so on, this leads to the following conclusion.
- Imploding 12 imps in 2 implosions or 1 Implosion will deal the same amount of damage, as the value of a imp is X, and 12 implosions is 12X.
- Imploding 12 Imps in 1 Implosion is faster than in 2 Implosions, as you press 1 button less, and while the damage is the sape, the DPS(Damage divided by Time) is not, so, 1 Bigger Implosion is more DPS than 2 Implosions who total the same amount of imps.
But Imps have a “duration” based around their casts, meaning you can’t just save 40 Imps and do a nuclear explosion-level Implosion, the imps will despawn some time.
- This means that while you don’t want to do 1-imp~3-imp implosions, you also can’t, under normal circunstances, save up 30 imps and implode them at once.
And because Hand of Guldan can spawn imps up to groups of 3, normally, and considering the regular shard economy of warlocks you will see that people advice implosions around a concept of implosion cycles.
- 6 Imp implosion cycle: 5 soulshards> Hand of Guldan>Shadow Bolt> Hand of Guldan> Shadowbolt>Implosion [this last shadowbolt is to give time for the last imp to spawn].
- 9 Imp implosion cycle: 5 Soul shards> Hand of Guldan> instant cast Demonbolt>Hand of Guldan> instant cast Demonbolt>Hand of Guldan> Shadow bokt>Implosion.
- In some situations you can push 12 Imp, this involvesh having 4 Demoncores for 8 shards gens, and at at least 4 Soulshards.
- I have given exemples who start with 5 shards, but you can star implosion cycles with different amounts of shards , the importance is to be efficient with your button press, more imps with less button press = easier to have more imps in a single implosion.
But you see, Demonic Tyrant have an particular userfull ability, while Demonic Tyrant is active your imps don’t spent their energy whiel casting, this also means that they will not vanish while tyrant is active.
- This allows you to gain extra damage for active imps while tyrant is active, meaning you don’t want to implode them as they will not benefit from such a effect if they are gone.
- This allows you to save a huge amount of imps [20+ imps] for a gigantic implosion, and like i told you, More Imps in less implosions = more dps.
- Of course, sometimes you will notice that the target pack is vanishing, and if you can’t use this imps on the next pack…you might decide to implode in that pack while tyrant is active [you will have less single target gain, but you will gain more aoe as your AOE will hit more targets].
TLDR: Implode at 2 targets or more, try to implode with at least 6 Imps, if possible more, Don’t Implode while tyrant is active unless its to hit more targets than you would hit when he vanishes.
There are also a few uses of Implosion that are outside of the norm.
- Imps don’t swap targets while in combat, but you can use implosion to move the “remaining damage” of a imp to a new target.
- Sometimes, you want to skip a pack of enemies, and having a bunch of imps following you can aggro enemies, imploding is a quick easy way to remove them.
- Sometimes you will have bosses who have weakness windows who increase damage taken by effects as big as 100% more damage taken, imploding before those windows end can be a damage gain, depending on how much the damage amplification is.
- Implosions can be used to break explosive orbs and totems if you have the orb/totem on target.
