iMac 5k for wow

The girlfriend is considering an Apple iMac 5k for photo and video editing. Though she does play casually. Does anyone have a 5k and how does it perform in wow? Is it possible to raid on this thing?
This is the one that she is looking at.

  • 3.8 GHz Intel Core i7 8-Core (10th Gen)
  • 8GB of DDR4 RAM | 512GB PCIe SSD
  • 27" 5120 x 2880 IPS Retina 5K Display
  • AMD Radeon Pro 5500 XT (8GB GDDR6)

paying extra for the mac brand name no ty ill spend less than half of what you would pay for that on a regular PC. that being said yes you could raid on that

Yes, the brand new 2020 iMacs will crush WoW at 1440p. 1440p is the sweet spot for the 5k displays because it is exactly half the resolution and will result in the best resolution scaling.

The new 10th gen Core i7 CPUs will easily handle WoW.

The 5500XT is a current midrange card (about a $200 gpu) and is a great choice for 1440p WoW gaming.

As for the RAM, do not buy any from Apple. The 8GB minimum is all you want from them. You will however need to buy and install some separately, which is easy to do.
4x16 GB sticks will be more than enough to future proof the Mac.
On Amazon, search: ā€œOWC 64GB (4 x 16GB) 2666MHz DDR4 PC4-21300 SO-DIMM 260 Pin Memory Upgradeā€ for the RAM.

If you feel you need an installation video, search on YouTube: ā€œ2020 imac 5k 27 inch memory upgradeā€ for a video posted by a channel named 9to5Mac.

Considered the fact her work might require a mac because the programs used are only available for it? That branch often uses mac.

Some people don’t have a choice.

I know hating on apple gets you guys all excited but please…

Gonna want more ram bruh. 8g is nothing

It’ll do fine, although the casing will thermally limit those parts, and it might sound a bit loud under heavy load. But that’s a deliberate design decision from Apple… so it is what it is.

Absolutely. 8GB would create issues for sure. Luckily, installing aftermarket RAM in 27 inch iMacs is extremely quick and easy

I have a 5K iMac Pro and it runs WoW perfectly. As other have said though please add more memory, 8GB is not enough for any heavy FCPX usage much less gaming. 32GB would be my recommendation as someone who edits in FCPX on several different Macs.

then shouldn’t her work be paying for it?

It’s not gonna cost $4,000, but it will be somewhere around $2500 after you buy the necessary aftermarket RAM upgrade.

Ya i just looked it up the model the op put is 3grand canadian lol. But still 3grand for that still baffles me

Don’t pay for that. I used to use mac for years (and still have an old reliable pre-retina ā€˜12 15ā€ MBP) but have since migrated over since last year for a cheaper 2700 (don’t really care to OC)+1080ti+32GB ddr4. Less than $1700 (cause I bought the gpu before the crypto craze) for more power than what you have.

Just get a regular mouse. Been a thing since I can remember with with Mac OS 9, well over 20 years ago.

Itll be great till they come out with the imac 6k in about 6 months and stop supporting the 5k. The 6k will be twice the cost, but you wont have to worry about any cumbersome input ports or charging cords.

This is a good point. This current 2020 iMac that released a couple of weeks ago is the end of an era for the iMac. It is getting a completely new redesign, along with dumping Intel CPUs permanently. ARM CPUs similar to what is in the iPad is going to be the future of iMac.

As for support, Apple has already stated they will be supporting this current iMac (Intel CPU) for years to come despite it becoming legacy hardware very quickly.

I am running WoW on a 2018 Mac mini - i3 8100 and a 560 eGPU (Sonnettech Puck). I side graded from a Dell with an I3 - 7100 and a GT 1030. I also had an Acer i3-7100 with an R3 my son is using. All of these are low end systems but all have SSD’s.

I can play on 5 (or higher) @ 1080p and have done the same on 1440p but I turn some of the extras off because I like frame rates better than I can see - I just like extra smooth.

If you prefer Mac, that system is more than enough to run WoW. If you want even higher frame rates, try boot camp. I have read that OS X isn’t the best gaming OS and you can get a jump simply by going native Windows. I can’t because my eGPU isn’t supported in Bootcamp, and I am too lazy now to screw around with the stuff needed to make it work.

I’d never buy a computer from apple, they’re overpriced for the components you get, almost impossible to properly clean without breaking warranty. I just run a virtual machine

With today’s job market, should she push the matter?
