The horde storyline and personality and the feeling of how much went in to it is so much more than what I went through on alliance so far. Flynn and Taela were okay but nothing compared to the princess and the LOA gods. Now I’m starting to understand all the alliance complaints. I’m tempted to transfer over to the horde since apparently, that’s where most of the effort and focus is going to.
One huge negative though is horde has to deal with Sylvanas and Nathanos, I can’t stand Nathanos how is he everywhere I turn did the lead developer’s kid make this character or something, could throw a pebble in any direction and find a more interesting character.
I liked the Alliance story better than the Hordes. I cant stand Sylvanas anymore and Nathanos is super annoying, IMO. I’m sick of the horde story just being about corrupted faction leaders.
I agree about Sylvanas/Nathanos as stated but the rest is solid.
I only finished the Nazmir storyline so far on horde but did most of the story on alliance. I was blown away by the difference, I felt so much more invested in what was going on in Nazmir, the voice acting and dialogue had much more depth. What I was doing felt like it was impacting the others as well like the tortallians(?/turtle people). The personality was spread out, not even a main character like the LOA of death made you invest more because of how much depth was there.
I didn’t feel that way much during my alliance journey. I cared for Taela’s story a bit and Flynn was good for some lighthearted fun but it felt more suface level. The attention spread out among races didn’t seem there either like it was for horde each playing some part.
“Woah, you guys get to lose your Warchiefs in ridiculous ways every expac? You get to commit atrocities that divide your peeps over and over? You get to have your sense of faction pride continually crushed? Gosh I’m jealous!”
Yeah…righto
Jaina got a fantastic story arc, Drustvar had some amazing story moments (and some that made me shiver), Taela, Flynn
Like maybe it’s you not connecting with it and not the storytelling being straight up bad? Which is perfectly fine btw
It’s not that because I connect way more to alliance than horde. I have like 9 characters on alliance and this one higher level on horde. If anything I would be more biased toward alliance and wanting to connect more to it from the start. The depth and investing in the alliance journey just wasn’t there.
From a character standpoint I do like what they’re doing with Jaina and a few others, I did like the villain Ashvane she was pretty good but it’s a letdown compared to the horde journey so far. I’m glad I did alliance first or I would’ve been more disappointed going through it.
It’s a matter of perspective, the other side of the field is always greener. No matter which faction you’re on, the story sucks:
Alliance are a bunch of goodietwoshoes who can do no wrong and thus, receive little to no development on their own but merely as “Horde did bad, let’s intervene”. Not to mention, the whole Jaina plot makes no freaking sense, from one moment to another, she’s a hailed hero.
Horde are psychotic mass murderers as if Blackhand, Garrosh, Cata and MoP never happened(right after the Legion invasion that took a huge toll on Azeroth itself). While we should be trying to stick together, we’re being pushed around to follow either an insane maniac or a depressed lame version of what was a great character in the past.
This isn’t about “the other side is better”, it’s about the whole thing sucks.
Zandalar is a beautiful continent and great for invading, savage swamps, deserts, jungles. Horde feel pathetic currently so not much motivation to keep leveling through, even though Nazmir and Vol’dun probably have some good quests and I want to learn more about the baron samedi troll
I dunno man. Its not just the storyline, its also the hub model. About 6 months ago I made a post talking about this issue:
Can i just move on, dudes? Every hub goes like this: Three initial quests, two follow up quests. Follow up quest leads to a quest giver with two further quests. Sometimes if im super lucky that leads to a Bonus zone where i score 2-4% of a bar per kill. Then once that’s done, its back to the second quest giver who may or may not have toiw more quests. If not. Back to the initial quest giver. He or she DEFINITELY has two more quests, and someone nearby has two quests. Do them, back to the hub. One more quest. Back to the hub. One final quest. Back to the hub, ‘lets move to the next hub’.
My opinion on the alliance story only changed once: The Jaina storyline was great. I really enjoyed it.
On the other hand i just finished leveling my first horde (since panda) and it felt effortless. Sure, i was pulled out here and there by the hub issue above, but nowhere to the extent of the alliance zones. I rarely felt like i was in a hub to be honest (except that one bit in vol’dun). It also didnt hurt that each zone felt like it had its own clear identity with a really clear protagonist. In Vol’dun you had the sands and the oppression of the vulpera. In Nazmir you had Talanjim bwomsamdi and a real focus on the Loa. And finally in Zuldazar it was the king, the bloodtrolls and what felt like the big battle to save the city. I havent got enough rep with honorbound to see rest of the story, but right now it just felt more… clear.
Im sure the alliance story is great for the lore heads, and probably even more intriguing with its politics, but its really a bunch of zones that kind of blend into one another, with a bunch of mobs that all feel like one another and a bunch of NPCs that feel super gimmicky (the scampy wisecracking pirate dude, the irish priest)… Somethings going on with some ships, some arms, and some pirates. Oh and they all involve the same looking people, in the same looking world, so don’t worry if you forget which zone you’re in or which problem you’re solving. Just pick up these three quests, go to the big blue circles, then pop back for a few follow ups.
It was ten levels of tedium.
Horde was ten levels of interesting transitions, clear contained storylines and clearly demarcated environments.
I understand that, I’m suggesting that you’re potentially more frustrated because you usually find yourself connecting with the Alliance but are struggling this expac. As opposed to the Alliance story being objectively worse, since how good either story is (or any story really) is realistically subjective
I agree and the implication of my posts isn’t that the Alliance side is better, from an overall standpoint I’d say that Alliance side is suffering too
My point was that this assertion that everything is great for the Horde is insanity
That’s interesting. I felt the exact opposite when I went through the Alliance side of the story. You all had much more interesting stuff going on than we do. Especially the whole Jaina story arc, which I’m not going to provide spoilers to those who haven’t done it … or the history of Drustvar … I could keep going.
What exactly do you think is more interesting for Horde? Cause I’m drawing blanks regarding anything memorable, outside the death of a couple Loa’s.
Oh okay. That does make some sense, as someone else said “the grass is always greener”.
I genuinely don’t think that’s case though, I’m not saying the alliance story and characters suck and it’s the worst ever or even “bad”, etc… I liked aspects of it. It’s just the comparison between the two journeys in how much the horde side got me to feel invested and care in the journey because of the depth/personality/charm. Just a little detail like a Tauren tossing a pirate off the bridge as everyone’s running, it gives that little extra to the Tauren.
I mean, the LOA gods were amazing. The personality, depth and detail. Whomever did the voice acting of the bat created a whole bat laugh that fit perfectly. Helpers on quest had personality. It kept things fresh by different aspects, the Frog LOA was different to the next… taking the time to give the two turtle guys different personility, and on and on.
I didn’t hate the alliance journey, I just wish I felt as much effort and depth and personality, and care went into the journey as I’m feeling while taking the horde journey. Some of that “grass is always greener” might be true but I don’t think it’s just that. I think there are clear, distinct little details and differences beyond the surface that can be seen between the two journeys. Something like Brother Pike, I believe he’s voiced acted by the XO from Battlestar, at least it sounds like it… he’s awesome. The stuff they could’ve done with this character, instead it just came across like not much effort put into it.
I’d trade Drustvar for whole Zandalar if it were my choice. Zuldazar story is boring and going around killing Loas is an insult to Troll lore. Really wish Nazmir and Vol’dun never happened either.
