I wanted an easy class for PvE content this expansion, so I leveled an Evoker and Paladin. But even with guides from Wowhead, I’m struggling to get the hang of the rotations. It feels like I’m constantly staring at my action bars or weak auras instead of focusing on the game. Am I missing something here or years of play behind everyone else that claim these are “easy”
I’m a casual player, so take that how you will. You just need practice I’m sure.
That said; Yeah, Ret and Evoker are pretty easy to pull decent DPS. BM hunter is basically braindead.
I’ve played for years and every time I pick up something new I’m constantly staring at the action bars. Takes practice for everything to become auto-pilot but it happens eventually.
Probably this.
WoW is designed first and foremost for “WoW players”, generally those that never put the game down.
I’d suggest watching videos on YouTube, maybe Murlok IO to see what others are building, stuff like that.
A lot of stuff in this game is muscle memory for having played for years upon years.
Try hunter.
Find a target dummy and practice your rotation until you can do it from muscle memory without looking at your action bars.
Everyone else is probably using Hekili or similar. You are doing yourself a favor by trying to actually learn the rotation. It will just take time.
To be honest, this is a problem across WoW now. Even the easiest classes have far more binds now, faster proc rates, and shorter cooldowns from how it used to be.
The game is just not that accessible to players that have difficulty with this sort of thing, so I would say take the pressure off yourself and play at your own pace until you pick it up.
I mean…. We’re not even close to the binds of like…. Mop
Hekili is actually very helpful for learning the basic rotation. After you get use to the feel you’ll notice that you’re not even paying attention to the guide anymore. It’s a good tool for beginners as some classes have buttons that are just situational.
I dunno man, there are a few classes that leave your bars pretty empty if you only add the essentials for your preferred play style. Then yes, there are some that look like you’re flying a plane.
No, you’re not missing anything. It takes time, trial and error, and you really can’t rush that no matter how many “guides” you utilize. The guides help, yes, but just enjoy the ride.
…AND…once you get the rotations down, then BAM Blizz will change it up on ya.

Hekili is a great way to start learning your spec.
As someone with a gazillion alts, it’s a great refresher too, as to how to play that class. ![]()
And once in a while it says to use a talent I had ignored until that point, which makes me go and actually read what it does and understand what I had been missing.
Same issue, have alts that I will play for a few months than not come back to until the end of the expansion. Sometimes by then the spec has changed and have to relearn it again.
Focus on me:
Play DH dps if u want a melee char (wich i recommend), both for pve and pvp, its by far the easiest class.
Play BMhunter if u want a ranged dps.
Drak and Pala are kinda easy classes too, if u need help let me know.
And dont bother downloading those DPS rotation addons, they make a mess and dont help, take a look at wowhead guides and icyveins for the basic rotation.
Play BM Hunter your welcome hunters are ez life.
Even as someone old in the scene learning something new is still learning something new. Just like any activity or game you are going to stumble and make mistakes. You don’t become a master of knowing 20 buttons over night, let your body learn what movement does what, and challeng yourself to try encounters slightly different don’t be a head against a brick wall. ![]()
I leveled 2 evokers during remix and deleted them because I have no idea how to play them.
Paladins on the other hand are a lot of fun. I find protection still much more enjoyable than retribution.
Just takes a little getting used to.
That’s how it’s always going to be if you’re trying to play perfectly. Eventually you’ll get to where you can focus on your character and see what your WAs are saying without having to look directly at them.
This is partly why I disabled all my addons. I just pve though.
If I were to play in groups, like mythic+anything, I’d probably have to enable at least DBM but I don’t.
As it is, the game’s UI is pretty user friendly and shows me when it’s a good time to select a talent in a fight by lighting up a bit.
That’s about it.
Mostly playing any class is hand/finger memory. Comes automatic pretty quick if you use the same or similar setup on your keyboard/mouse and this allows me to be able to focus on the game more.
