I'm playing the wrong Archtype, apparently

The latest Skillcapped video said a good plan is to play your archetype. E.g. If you like aggression, play these specs. If you like to hang back and just heal, play these specs, but they didn’t say what the healers were.

I googled it and it said this:

  • Proactive:

    • Restoration Druid: Known for their ability to prepare for damage with pre-emptive healing and utility, utilizing shapeshifts, kiting, and crowd control.
    • Discipline Priest: A proactive healer with a focus on instant healing and damage mitigation, offering a more “dampenish” playstyle than Holy Priest.
    • Mistweaver Monk: While often considered passive, Mistweavers can be very aggressive in 2v2, utilizing crowd control and burst healing.
  • Reactive:

    • Holy Priest: A forgiving healer with a lot of room for skill expression and game-winning plays, often reacting to incoming damage.
    • Holy Paladin: A tanky healer with strong defensives and a playstyle focused on big, instant heals.
  • Hybrid (Proactive and Reactive):

    • Discipline Priest: Can react to damage with instant heals, but also proactively manage damage with cooldowns and shields.
    • Mistweaver Monk: Can be proactive with healing and damage, while also being reactive with burst healing and crowd control.

Is this accurate and what do I need to know about swapping to a Holy spec? I love my resto Shaman, but I’m not an in-your-face player. So I think it’s time I move on. Any help you can offer is appreciated.

Why would you give up your class because “skill cap” is giving you top echelon player perspectives and data? You can play your shaman reactive or proactive all depending on what you like or want. Unless you are a top .1% player, you don’t have to follow what they say to a T. You as a shaman are a hybrid utility class. Put your totems up, position yourself better and toss out your heals. If you are having trouble with people sitting on you, 1, that just comes with playing a healer and learning how to juke and survive, 2. your teammates are failing you by not micro ccing or ccing in general to pressure those dps to use def and run to set up kills in the next “go”.

Shaman are great, just keep playing and finding your niche on the battlefield.

In BGB, shamans are number 3 of 7 on representation above 1800. The top ones are outliers of being incredibly OP right now and other gimmicks.

I think this is an example of a choice where it’s better to trust your own experience and your own opinions, rather than someone else’s categorization. The internet thrives off of “You’re doing (X) wrong, actually.”

You know what your buttons are, and you can also watch videos of how players operate your type of spec. If it looks and feels fun, you’re on the right track. If not, then maybe there are better options.

As an aside, I take a sip every time I see the phrase “skill expression” to make sure I’m staying hydrated.

LOL so noted.

Because if you’re playing against type, you might be screwing yourself. I guess that’s why I’m asking.

Idk broski, all I know from my personal experiences over the years of being a META chaser until recently with TWW. Is that I didn’t master any of them and what little benefits came with the “stronger” specs didn’t outweighs the underlying problem in the bigger picture…getting better. It was more of a handicap than any progression I might of acquired.

If I was in your seat, I’d master my shaman before trying anything else. If you feel like there is zero more you can do in every scenario, then by all means jump ship. I spent all of DF healing pvp as a disc priest, dragon and shaman, with dragon being the most fun and disc being my strongest suite with my type of playstyle. Its all up to you and what you want to achieve.

Yeah I completely agree re: putting in the time, but I’m wondering if I’m putting in the time on a spec that doesn’t fit my playstyle.

I find that every time I go to DPS as a resto Shaman, one of the DPS eats dirt.

I’d look into if you haven’t already omniCC party tracker addon. You can see which of your dps didn’t use their abilities and just died having them up. It will let you know if you or them are causing problems. DPS tend to be quick to blame healers for dying when in fact, they didn’t use any of their abilities to survive in a “GO” kill window.

play what you want to play, worry about tier lists and meta if you want to go play arena, but in bgs you can just do whatever you want.

There is something to this video though. If you are fighting against what your spec excels at, then maybe another spec might feel more natural to play.

E.g. if you hate being FC, playing MW is going to be rough in blitz. Or, if you love doing damage while healing maybe look at disc/pres.

I think that video has more to do with the need for “content” than it does with some unspoken design philosophy and priority behind the roles and specs you choose to play.
