I'm building a new computer

And I was wondering if anyone here truly knows their stuff and could assist me. I did a lot of research last night and made a list of components. Maybe people have suggestions, comments, etc. I really want to keep it cheap, around 1000-1200 and all from Best Buy parts. Here is what I came up with.

Power supply unit (PSU)
($160) EVGA GQ Series 850W ATX12V / EPS12V 80 Plus Gold Modular Power Supply

Central processing unit (CPU)
($200) Intel Core i5-9600K 9th Gen 6-Core 6-Thread 3.7 GHz Socket LGA 1151

Motherboard
($150) MSI B550 Gaming Plus (Socket AM4) USB-C Gen 2 AMD ATX Gaming Motherboard PCIE Gen 4

Operating system (OS)
($140) Windows 10 Home English

Memory (RAM)
($65) PNY XLR8 16GB (2PK 8GB) 2.666GHz PC4-21300 DDR4 DIMM Unbuffered Non-ECC Desktop Memory Kit

Graphics processing unit (GPU)
($220) XFX THICC II Pro AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB GDDR6 PCI Express 4.0 Graphics Card

Storage (SSD)
($55) Samsung 860 EVO 500GB Internal SATA Solid State Drive

Computer Casing
($99) Corsair iCUE 220T RGB Airflow ATX Mid-Tower Smart Case

System cooling
($110) CORSAIR LL Series 120MM Case Cooling Fan Kit

WiFi Adapter
($55) NETGEAR - AC1200 Dual-Band WiFi USB 3.0 Adapter

Total
160 + 200 + 150 + 140 + 65 + 220 + 55 + 99 + 110 + 55 = 1255

Why are you limited to buying only from best buy?

  1. CPU and Motherboard don’t work with each other. You need an AMD CPU or an intel motherboard.
For example. Ryzen 5 3600 or 5600 with that motherboard.

  2. You can get Corsair LPX ram @ 3200Mhz at that price. This will increase performance especially if you’re on AMD.

  3. Save money and drop the LL Fans and invest in a better GPU.

  4. There are Motherboards with Wifi capability for $20-$30 more. No reason for you to grab a wifi adapter. i.e. Asus TUF, or the MSI B550 Edge w/ wifi

I’d get a 5600x if you can find one, but then again in game workloads its not much different than the 10600k so if that is cheaper it might be a better option.

Also, it is available. The 5600x is gone at this point.

Thank you very much! This is what I need right now lol I’m a total noob and you’re steering me into the right direction. I really appreciate it.

I’m using my Best Buy card to buy everything so I can pay in monthly installments.

EDIT

This is what I have now. How’s it look?

Power supply unit (PSU)

($160) EVGA GQ Series 850W ATX12V / EPS12V 80 Plus Gold Modular Power Supply

Central processing unit (CPU)

($305) AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 3rd Gen 8-Core 16-Thread 3.6GHz

Motherboard

($200) MSI MPG Z490 GAMING EDGE WIFI (Socket LFGA1200)

Operating system (OS)

($140) Windows 10 Home English

Memory (RAM)

($115) CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 32GB (2PK 16GB) 3.2GHz DDR4 DRAM

Graphics processing unit (GPU)

($330) AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT RAW II PRO 6GB GDDR6 PCI Express

Storage (SSD)

($55) Samsung 860 EVO 500GB Internal SATA Solid State Drive

Computer Casing

($100) Corsair iCUE 220T RGB Airflow ATX Mid-Tower Smart Case

Try something like this

AMD Ryzen 5 3600 or 5600X
Asus TUF B550M-PLUS (WIFI)
Any 16GB DDR4-3200 C16 X2 kit(Lower CAS Latency is better)
RTX 2060
Samsung 970 Evo Plus or PNY CS3030 500GB (pick one)
NZXT C650, Adata XPG Core Reactor 650W, Seasonic Focus GX 650W, Corsair RM650x (pick one)
Phanteks Eclipse P400A, Corsair iCUE 220T, Corsair 4000D or 4000X. (pick one)
Windows 10 Home

Should fit into your budget.

Only thing I’d change (from the above mentioned corrections) is to swap to a 5600XT. Maybe get a cheaper SSD.

From a quick browse of OP’s profile, he may not have already purchased shadowlands.

And you can get Shadowlands free with this purchase:

$339 with $80 off promotion ($259) + free Shadowlands ($39) and Godfall (? value). If he was gonna buy SL anyway, then that’s $220 total, very cheap.

And you aren’t going to find an RTX 2060 for that price, and the 5600XT is pretty close in performance.

ASUS Radeon RX 5600 XT STRIX

I have Shadowlands already but thanks for the consideration!

Cool - one thing to consider is that even at $259, it’s a good deal. I don’t know if you can transfer that SL key to anyone else, but you also will get Godfall if you want.

Cheapest new RTX 2060 I could find was this one

For $339 - $40 Promo still $300.

MSI RTX 2060

I would still get the 5600 XT, since the 2060 isn’t really going to be doing any RTX in WoW anyway. and this 5600 XT model is a much higher end model cooling wise and cheaper. Generally comes out slightly ahead in most titles as well.

I really appreciate the help, Salranas. Do you build your own computers? Do you have any recommendations for a noob? What tools do I need? Any specifics I need to know about?

There are ton of guides on youtube that are great.
I.e. bitwit, Paul’shardware, Jayztwocent and the list continues…

A philips screw driver and maybe zip ties is all you need.

What above said - those are good resources on youtube and it doesn’t take any specialized tools or knowledge. Just a workspace and a screwdriver and a bit of patience.

Any of the videos by the major channels should work fine - look less at individual parts (as that changes over time) and more at the methodology.

Use pcpartpicker.com to help you get your blueprint, which also filters for compatibility (with good confidence, if not flawless) and then use your own means to find deals. Not all deals show up on that site, so find the best deals between local and internet retailers.

Some things are pretty much a science, like what part fits with what, but a lot of them are personal preference such as cases and coolers/rgb type stuff.

I’d recommend at this point in time to just skip any 2.5" tray drives and just get an m.2 nvme SSD - that would minimize clutter, its faster, and they are cheap nowadays.

If you want, you can make a pcpartpicker.com list and show us for feedback.

Or, if you prefer, you can give us some requirements (use, budget, etc.) and we can give some suggestions.

Good luck with your build fam
