I'm afraid of talking in English!

Guys… you guys who have the privilege of being born in an English speaking country you rarely know how hard it is to learn English as a second language and even worse, how hard it is to be courageous enough to try out our speaking skills.

I’m quite confortable writing and even reading and listening to English but it is so hard to speak… Seriously, when I try out my skills by entering on a Discord I don’t feel confortable speaking. I usually write it down on a guild to avoid actual conversation in English.

I really wish to improve my speaking skills but I’m too shy to try it out. I wasted years learning another languages and I noticed that my goal was to avoid deeping my English skills, I know some French, Spanish and even Japanese and the language that I use to learn all these languages is English and I’m too afraid to use English actively.

You gotta nip that fear in the bud and face it! You can’t control what other people think of you or what they say. In the end, it doesn’t matter. You are the one making an effort to learn the language. Most native English speakers only know English. You know five languages! That’s awesome!

Your written English is done quite well.
If anyone gives you grief, donʻt take it too harshly, learn from the mistakes and press on.
Some of us, we learn best by doing. When we fall we make sure to take steadier steps next time.

As Fenny said the effort you’re making is commendable. I’m a native English speaker and everything I say is a mixture of mispronunciations and ramblings. I hope you do find a group of people to speak with because I’m sure you’re far better than you imagine

If you suck at speaking english, you won’t get better by staying silent.

It’s because English actually is one of the harder languages to learn and quite honestly, I don’t mind broken English at all. The place that I worked at for 6 years (until last Friday) hires a lot of people from other countries and I loved working with them. I also consider them some of the smarter people I’ve worked with: I totally understand you are trying to translate what you are thinking into a different language.

I worked with people that could speak at least 3 languages, but I heard of a woman that spoke like 5 different dialects.

I would argue that most US citizens don’t truly “know” English either

Let’s see:
English English
American English
Canadian English
Australian English
New Zealand English

And that’s just off the top of my head.

So really wouldn’t worry about butchering it too much

Most people can’t even speak more than 1 language unlike you. Be proud of that.

Privilege is relative. I got lots of practice speaking Japanese when I played MMOs in Japan.

This is not uncommon. Honestly - just go for it. You don’t get better at something by not practicing it.

If you have a guild, make your circumstances known to them and they’ll probably be happy to practice with you.

Just use the secret code phrase we English speaking countries use to let each other know we’re cool

I’m going to tell you a true story back from vanilla. I met a player who didn’t speak a shred of english. He said something I didn’t understand, I said “sorry I speak english,” and we emoted a couple greetings and grouped. This all started because I simply helped the guy as we were farming ruin cloth outside kara [a hot spot at the time], and after that moment we played for hours without a word.

At the end, he emoted he had to go. We politely did the emotes and he opened trade and gave me a bunch of ruin cloth and other goods. I [emoted] thanked him, we bowed and said our good byes. My point is, some times you don’t have to know each others language to figure out ways to communicate and just be nice to each other.

The rest is up to you. If I went into a Spanish speaking server, I’d either expect myself to learn the language or just do as that guy did and be polite and learn to get around it.

Out of curiosity, what is your native language?

It’s a very difficult language.

Just remember, the people giving you a hard time probably can’t speak more Than one language. So credit to you for knowing multiple!

Considering the number of people I know who have trouble with English as a first language I wouldn’t worry too much, OP.

Don’t be afraid to show off your skills. I don’t know a whole of people that are bilingual around where I am, it’s a real accomplishment. Be proud of yourself.
