So, I’m a little confused regarding the practical effect of the ilvl scaling for pvp gear. For example, the Conquest weapons are ilvl 606 at Champion 4/8. In the tooltip description, it says:
"Equip: Increases ilvl to a minimum of 639 in Arenas and Battlegrounds"
So, I guess question is this: is there any benefit to upgrading this weapon to Champion 8/8? I mean, if it’s already a minimum of 639, isn’t that higher than what it would be at Champion 8/8 anyway?
I guess it’s just not clear as to the benefits (or lack thereof) of upgrading pvp gear that scales in battlegrounds and arenas.
(Also, while I’m here asking questions: the ilvl scaling does not occur when you’re doing pvp in open-world War Mode, correct? It’s literally only arenas and battlegrounds, right?)
It’s purely affecting the PvE item level; the PvP item level stays constant.
The PvP scaling does in fact affect WPvP.

So, just to ensure I’m clear, there is really no reason to upgrade pvp gear unless you are using that gear in pve content? In other words, if you ONLY use a piece of pvp gear for pvp, then you don’t really need to upgrade it, correct?

Upgrading has no effect on WPvP. The PvP scaled ilvl takes effect in WPvP.
Upgrading strictly affects PvE.

Ahh my mistake. Misread what you wrote.
One more point of clarification: when you say that the scaling does affect War Mode (world pvp), you mean that the scaling applies only when fighting other players in War Mode correct? In other words, it doesn’t apply to when you fight NPCs while in War Mode, am I right?
Generally correct, although there’s an exception within the bounds of WPvP quest areas, where the PvP scaling automatically takes effect.
And of course if you’re engaged in PvP combat while also attacking PvE enemies, you’ll scale up.
Thanks for the information!
It’s a little goofy how it works honestly. I wonder if they actually expect players to switch equipment constantly while out and about doing content in War Mode. (And, that concept is even weirder when you recognize that you can’t switch equipment if someone attacks you without warning.)
