If you're having Aggro issues as a hunter

Throw arcane shot out the window until you are in a group. I’m convinced it does more threat than we think and it is trash dmg anyway.

If you are having aggro issues as a hunter, pay attention to your pet’s Growl spell. Make and use a macro if needed. I send my pet in first, before unloading on the mob with spells, using this macro:

#showtooltip
/targetenemy [noexists][dead][help]
/petfollow
/petpassive
/petattack
/cast Growl

This makes sure that the pet casts Growl before Claw or Bite. I still make sure that Growl has successfully gone off and that the mob didn’t resist it (this happens).

I generally have no trouble using Arcane Shot or Serpent Sting and on top of that, I’ve got Venomstrike from WC which randomly adds another nature-based shot, Venom Shot.

Edit: oh and make sure you’re keeping Growl ranked up.

Shouldn’t second the line be /targetenemy [noexists][nodead][help] ?

Why would you want your macro to target a dead mob? I’m confused.

and growl is updated every 10 level, so if you are 19, 29, 39, etc… growl is less effective.

If you’re facing a high level mob your pets growl is resisted a lot, instead allow your pet to build up threat and use serpent sting and occasional arcane shot.

All I know is it works. I got it from here (it’s 2.3.1-Pet Attack) and modified it to use just Growl until I can add Dash, too:

https://forum.classicwow.live/topic/893/hunter-macros-tips

  • It’s better to fight mobs your level or 1-2 below you
  • Update growl as your pet levels
  • Don’t ignore updating claw/bite as you level
  • You can pull with Serpent Sting and auto shoot for awhile while your pet builds threat

This is if you plan on just grinding mobs to level. It’s faster to go against equal or slightly lower, instead of trying to farm against orange. The amount of growl resist and misses/dodge will lower your killing speed.

My wife mains a hunter on retail, but she never played one in vanilla. She got started during TBC when I finally convinced her to play. That being said, she doesn’t want to have to deal with feeding her pet and buying ammo all the time so she opted to roll a mage this time around. This is all really good stuff though as far as advice on macros and tips on aggro management. For once we actually have discussion rather than a drama/troll fest :sunglasses:

Wait…2.3.1? That’s a TBC era macro then isn’t it? Amazing that it works in Classic too :ok_hand:

You misunderstand. That’s where the macro is in the article, which is quite long.

Ohhh ok I see. I didn’t actually look at the link just yet. Still, I may want to go check it out since I was thinking about making a hunter alt later on down the road

I played a Warrior and a Pally back in 05, so this is my first time playing a Vanilla Hunter. I’m actually surprised at how much I have to do on this low level character, compared to what I did on my Warrior.

I never had to stop leveling to travel to another zone to tame a pet that has an ability my pet needs, or make sure to also train my pet at the pet trainer back in Orgrimmar. I’m also babysitting his happiness bar, on top of having to hold all this meat and extra ammo.

It has been an experience, but one that I’m enjoying.
