Though he ended up teaching me the alt + # code to type it out, special characters are really dumb.

This thread is peak American. They’re called diacritics. People use them in other languages.

I have no issue with them on pen and paper. There’s just no sensible way to type it out on a keyboard though.

Right click on their name in chat (or in the party / raid frame) and select “copy character name”. Then you can paste it wherever you need to. Makes it very easy to invite people, add them as a friend, send mail or look them up on Warcraft Logs.

And probably have keyboards that directly support them.

If I’m going to play an American game, on an American Server, making a name with special characters is a good way to get left alone entirely. (Especially the clowns that have the FIRST letter being a special character so you can’t even get around doing the damned Alt Code when they’re not online by having them on your friends list.)

Волки would be a terrible idea to make make my name for the US servers.
As would Шolves or Wσlves

See above. You can right click on their name in chat / party frames and select “copy character name”. It’s not hard. There’s no reason to learn ASCII alt codes.

Right Click also brings up a menu to Whisper or Invite as well. The only thing you can’t do directly like that is invite to Guild.

You know what else isn’t hard?

Not putting a special character in your name, and certainly not the first one.
(Pretty sure Hierophant doesn’t need Alt+0216 to spell…)

Everyone being able to right-click copy your name doesn’t make you not a putz for giving EVERYONE an extra step in putting your name in.
(Also, if I was in some World PvP and someone suggested in party chat for me to ‘inv Hierophant’ …you’re hosed bud.
