If you love "soandso" in WoW then you'll love FFXIV

Because it doesn’t have anything resembling m+. That’s the only thing stopping me from playing it more. (I already play it, as you said the MSQ is good so I always play through the story)

Because the story is the most mediocre its been in years, the classes are watered down bs due to the developer design of “balance over all” to the point where classes are basically the same job with different icons, and its not worth having an act sub for a .X patch with 30 minutes of new content only to wait another 6 months.

Why don’t you ask this on the FFXIV forums bud. This is the WoW forums.

You did notice I got all the responses I needed, right? Thanks for the input though… move along if you don’t want to contribute. So odd to me these type of replies.

Probably was. Your post count suggest it was, but alts are a thing here.

Either way, this is a question that gets asked almost every month. Usually as a way to get some clout.

The biggest thing WoW has over FF14 is a better transmog system and open-world experience (e.g. being able to fly from zone to zone). I like FF14, but those two factors make it impossible to want to invest too much time in it unless if I want to get something very specific done.

Then if you got all the replies you needed what are you still doing here?

Get over yourself bud.

Ffxiv is that way. >

Going through the story of FF14, here are the things I thought would make me play it over WoW:

  1. Epic bosses.
  2. Soundtracks during bosses that make the more epic.
  3. Story progression inbetwen raid releases that keeps the world grounded.
  4. A world that seems far more alive than WoW.

The reality wasn’t entirely different, but it didn’t turn out that way. Here’s why I play both now:

  1. Epic bosses are still epic, but only for a small amount of time. (although there are older dungeons to this day that I still see as thematically amazing.)
  2. Soundtracks are youtubable.
  3. Story isn’t enough to stay subbed like I would with WoW. You get new story done pretty quickly. If you’re just starting, you’ll have a lot to do but may seem tedious.
  4. World is still alive, but due to things like points 1 and 3, my ‘guild’ is often pretty deserted since people quit inbetween raids and story updates.

Ultimately, if you simply love the mechanics of raiding and dealing with problem solving, you’ll have fun raiding. I personally feel like the netcode makes FF14 a game I can never ‘main,’ even if there’s a lot I like about it. The way hard-mode raids interact with this netcode for wipe mechanics bothered me a lot when I tried.

TL;DR: once you get down to it, they may both be MMOs, but they have different strengths. I don’t see it as “one or the other,” since you’ll be missing something either way.

Give it a try and see if it draws you in. Not sure if I answered your question exactly. :open_mouth:

I FOUND YOU!! YOUR BOX SURVIVED! >_>;;

Side note, I had played FFXIV since 2.0 and the community there generally known as the GCBTW community. Their Toxic Positivity is the most nauseating and irksome nonsense I’ve seen. It’s unfortunately the reason why it’s in the state it’s in.

Wait, what? Can you explain?

Assuming this is a legit question.

There is a general belief that the FFXIV community is too nice, such much so that any negativity is smothered by everyone around being super positive to the point of ignoring any problems with the game and it’s community.

This is only half true.

Toxic Positivity in FFXIV is this overt notion that no one is bad and everyone is encouraged to play how they want. There’s various instances of it, such as how Dancers should be encouraged to use AoE skills on single target mobs or Reapers spamming their AoE’s to build gauge faster.

And when someone pushes back on it, the community rallies to the aid of the poor game play. There’s been accounts on it and if you do enough content you’ll see it in the wild. It’s a huge disservice to new players too because instead of being shown how to play a job correctly, they play it so poorly and then try to do harder content and get ran off.

It’s one of the worst things about FFXIV. Worse than WoW’s toxicity.

Go check out Heroes of the Storm. Full of tryhards and toxic people that make WoW players look like charitable murlocs.

Generally I would say that the FF14 community isn’t as good as they say it is, and the WoW community isn’t as bad as they say it is. It’s a different atmosphere for sure, and you sometimes do get a bit of a “happytown” vibe like people are putting on fake customer service voices or something. But by-in-large most interactions are the same as you would get in WoW. Normal people running normal content talking about normal things.

There’s a bit of deification of Yoshi-P which I find… unsettling. For an example look no further than this very thread.

The community is definitely more moderated but that doesn’t mean you won’t find toxic people from time to time. My two worst MMO experiences with other people both occurred in FF14. Most of the “toxic positivity” stuff you find on social media, not as much in the game itself. Ironically I think I see it more from WoW players on WoW boards than I do in FF14 spaces.

This is another issue in FFXIV too. If someone is struggling to play and you offer feedback (not the jerksauce kind, but earnest feedback), you run the risk of being reported for harassment. Feedback can be perceived as being ‘toxic’ (rightfully so if someone is being a jerk) when you provide info that can help their gameplay.

It’s just a different type, it’s more passive aggressive. Funny enough if you respond back with just being aggressive. most don’t know how to cope with it and shut up, lol.

Either way, both games have strengths and weaknesses. FF is a story driven MMO, with more fleshed out characters. You may enjoy that more, then that’s what you’ll gravitate more towards.

I play both, and I like both. When i don’t feel like playing one, I’ll play the other. I like both art styles and the races in each. Sorry though WoW, FF has the better clothing, hands down.(while WoW has a better system of holding said clothing.)

An interesting drawback of FFXIV is because the addon policy is “don’t ask don’t tell”, that means that things like Dalamud plugins that perform your entire rotation for you bound to a single button is just something people try to pretend doesn’t exist. Especially since doing something about it would mean losing the plugins like the one that let their modded characters be viewable by other players, or the one that makes it actually possible to place furniture in your house easily without exploiting glitches.

This is honestly the one and only truth when community get’s brought up.

The meme of everyone in FFXIV rallying behind poor gameplay, from my observation, is a wow forum myth. In practice, generally nobody cares how people play most of XIV’s content is super casual and the risk of actually failing is very low. This is not a bad thing for the game as it does result in a significantly chiller experience.

Likewise, the belief that you will be yelled at constantly for being bad at WoW is a FFXIV myth. I just started dipping my toes into Mythic+ and to be perfectly honest, I can think of 1 dungeon where people commented on performance, and it was just noting that the team didn’t know how to do a mechanic with an affix properly and was being taught how.

I’m sure both games get their fair share of toxic once you get into the game’s actual endgames where people really and truly try. But in general, the only real difference between the two communities is how many polygons their character models have.

WOw, again, thanks so much for the feedback.

@Ginzø ty also.

I do watch twitch a lot for pointers and learning gameplay for PVP - So I just went there and right now there are roughly 40k ppl watching WoW Streamers right now…FFXIV there isn’t even 4,000. I know its not perfect science but that worries me a tad.

FF14 is big on Twitter.

Not for reasons you should investigate, though. (NSFW and spoilers)
