I didn’t realize until recently that you can change your character’s gender in the barbershop. I’m glad this feature was implemented. However, when a person changes their gender, they typically change their name as well. I haven’t used this feature as out of the 20+ characters I have, this is the only one who I could change their gender and their name would still be appropriate.
I recognize that name changes should not be allowed at the drop of a hat. Maybe have a 7 day cooldown, like restoring deleted characters?

Nah, way too much room for abuse with making names as easy to change as that.
Unless you’re naming characters Elizabeth or something, most names work fine swapping.
Maybe, some other games have the option for free name changes like once a month. But with WoW you have so many characters and the option to buy, I’m not sure of the social repercussions for being able to change for free.
Tbh I wish but I think it’s going to be a tough sell unless if they finally implement some sort of ‘grouping’ like through warbands. It’d be great for RP since you can use any name you want. But then that likely leads to other visibility/privacy topics if people can identify you via your grouping, how that can be controlled by the user, and then gotto also consider their naming dependencies. E.g. mail will be a mess, how they use their item restoration service might get funky. It’s messy tbh.

Just figure out some way your name can be interpreted as offensive, specifically having to do with the gender swap if you can. Then get your friends to report you… done.
Race, name, and faction changes should all be FREE atp.

Yeah, the ability to freely change your name is a horrible idea in a social game.

There was a method for free name changes you could do.
Delete your character, make a new character with the exact same name, restore your character that was deleted and it’ll tell you that your name is taken and offer a free name change.
I think this method was “fixed” somehow though, but it used to work.
But…you can do that. As much as you want. You just have to pay for it.
If we had surnames that were locked, then they could do it.
If you don’t want to spend money you could get one of those RP addons and set your full name and for it to appear in chat for you that way. Doesn’t work for anyone else that doesn’t have the RP addon, but it’s a self solution and a free one if the name bothers you and you don’t want to give blizz more money.
The problem is that our characters genders and the like isn’t tied to the code that identifies which character as which one. Our names do that however.
If we had multiple names then sure, as in one name for the server to provide us with character data, and one (or several) in-game names. But that’s why addons like TRP and Narcissus are quite popular.
Sometimes these sorts of requests are best solved by just installing addons that can do the thing you are looking for.
Rather than freeform text, let’s just get some finite set radio buttons up for pronouns. I’m sure that’s more efficient and faster overall for the game.
