If they knew then what they know now

… they would have never introduced flying
… they would have never had stealth as an ability
… they would never talk about what their plans were for the next expansion…

datamining really killed the intrigue of wow with that last part

I can agree with the last point, since they literally told us every single thing they wanted to do in the expansion so they promised the sky and the moon and flopped hard

Is there NO WAY they can prevent data mining? I really believe it serves no good purpose.

Don’t go looking for the data mine and you won’t find it?

I don’t think they really want to just straight up remove data mining. Sites like wowhead live on it, and Blizz likes having that relationship with them. Wowhead is way better at announcing wow news than the actual wow team is. They’d be killing that if they axed data mining

They’ve encrypted high priority stuff before.

It’s probably not worth it to do to everything, though. It’ll all get spoiled on the PTR anyways.

I like how you quote the question, then answer a completely different question. The question YOU answered (which was never asked) was “How do I keep from seeing datamined information?”

If you want, you can repost your answer.

I thank you for this blessing. I suppose my answer was an attempt to extrapolate the why of why data mining should be prevented.

Personally, data mining has no impact to me. Because it has no impact to me, I have no interest in stopping it from happening.

Generally, people take interest in things that impact them. If you find this to be an unreasonable inference, well, alrighty!

To directly answer your question, of course data mining can be prevented. When they keep things hidden, they’re preventing data mining.

But there’s a whole lot of stuff blizzard isn’t going to care whether it gets data mined

I think Blizzard should leave datamining landmines as a way to totally misdirect people. Also put out some faked “leak” screenshots and the like. Make people chase their tails and go down totally false rabbit holes.

I see how that plays out:

  1. bellular makes a video about it
  2. asmongold reacts to video
  3. GD erupts in people whining about the same thing cause they saw it in a video

Would be pretty priceless honestly

Only by removing PTRs and open beta testing.

FFXIV lacks them and manages to keep 90%+ of stuff under wraps until launch. An easy example:

  • We don’t know who the final boss of Dawntrail is yet, and I just mean the last boss of the MSQ at launch.
  • Early access is late tonight to tomorrow morning.

Leaks can still happen, but no datamining before anything launches.

But WoW players know more about TWW than FFXIV players know about DT… on the literal eve of the latter launching.

Ok. So NOW what you did was repond to my snarky, sarcastic reply with a straight forward explanation and perspective.

I now feel like an idiot for my reply to your post. To apologize, I will log in on my main toon (a Goblin Rogue) and march him straight up to the gates of Stormwind where I will stand quietly while the guards deplete me of my health.

I bid you goodday sir!

You do what you believe is right. Sounds like an adventure to me!

Later tater

Why? How are those things hurting Blizzard?

Can’t speak to the other two, but they’ve mentioned in the past that flight created struggles, and that’s not unique to WoW, either.

I don’t think they’d change it given the chance, though.

flying removed the illusion of people being social in game or something.

It be BS. You numlocked this. My social bit would be guild chat or on discord.

I did night elf death march a few times in classic. You really don’t see people to /wave too. even if you bothered to pay attention pressing W the whole way lol.

Its about 20 minutes of walk time to SW as a night elf on that death march.

Shattrath at start till flying unlocked was the same thing. Or pay the mages. Week 1 of tbcc mages were making mad bank off portal requests.

Struggles in selling subscriptions?

Nope, just in development.

Yes, when they did TBC they had to change the landscape because it wasn’t designed originally to be viewed from above. They never made the change to a couple of the BC starting areas which is why we can’t fly in Quel’Thalas.
