With all the demand for new races, where are the hybrids?
In AD&D there were always half elves as a playable race, and well Aleria and Turylon are an item, so was Sylvanas and Nanthanos when they were alive I guess… And didn’t her other sister have a fling with a human? Plus there is Garona, it might be unusual in wow, but not in other fantasy genre’s like AD&D had it.
I guess that there would be a ton of issues with half races in such a two-dimensional faction based world. Then there would be who are the half breeds? Human and anything else? Could get weird and just imagine the demands on the forums then!
A derivative to this would be alternative body shapes as part of the character customization. I would consider playing male characters more if they were not so ridiculously steroid huge all the time. I like having more real estate on my 15” laptop, so the slight figure of a female is better for most of my toons.
What if hybrids was an option within the specific race as a body style option? So you could only have half Night Elves on the alliance side starting in Darnassus, or Half Orcs on the Horde side starting in Razor Hill? So half breeds started in the original area just like their fantasy race would. Just an idea.
I believe, a long time ago, Metzen or someone else fairly high up commented that they weren’t too keen on the idea of half-races becoming playable. Lorewise there is some precedent for Half-Elves and Half-Ogres, but not much for other combinations.
One of the biggest customizations that would really be an enhancement would be alternative body shapes, taller/shorter, wider/thinner, and people could RP the rest if they wanted to and not even interfere with the game at large.
Nothing says that the game timelines and event and character have to match the novels and comics externally. Anyone that followed any comic series knows that! Besides they change and revise and alter things to fit the current game state.
Ultimately I wish there were other body styles as mentioned. A half-breed is only one justification that would be more interesting then another allied race.
Well, as Azeroth gains more and more sentient races that apparently flourish war and death is inevitable as would be cross species if plausible.
Homosapiens wiped out Neanderthals, the same would be for Azeroth. The predominant species would conquer the rest over time, and in doing so incorporate those into the collective whole to become stronger.
Half-races always strike me as strange and lazy. I mean we apparently already have half orc/ogre in Rexxar, half orc/draenei in Garona, and half elf/human with Arator, but it always struck me as trying to breed cats and dogs. We call them races but really they’re different species.
Orcs and ogres are at least native to draenor, we can’t speak for sure on their evolutionary path. Draenei aren’t even from the same PLANET. We know that elves evolved from trolls and are native to Azeroth, but humans came from Titan creations. The only half races that make logical sense to me are elves/trolls since we know that they’re going to share at least some genome.
I always thought Half-Orcs and Half-Elves would be great neutral races but apparently Blizzard hates neutral races and doesn’t want to add the half breed races.
Half-elves and Half-Ogres are the only ones i’d be okay with but for the most part i don’t really feel they’d bring much that’s worthwhile to the game. Not to mention we have so many different races that it’d be opening a can of worms. It’s doubtful everyone would get the combos they want and it’d be strange and confusing in a lot of cases.
I think different body types for races would be good but not do to cross breeding races
Yeah i guess hyrid races implies a little more IMO. If body types (fatter, skinnier, bulkier, less bulky) are added it shouldn’t be attached to the concept of mixed races.
But, if the players want to RP it, they can and it does not break the game. I’d personally just like a half race option but will take whatever customiztion is possible.
