If the sun exploded

I would die.

Yes, because we’d be in motion and stay in that motion as far as I know. If there was an explosion or force strong enough to launch the earth off course I think it’d just decimate the earth. Not sure about that, but a sudden shift like that would have to be catastrophic.

It’s kind of like the thought exercise, what would happen if the earth suddenly, instantaneously stopped rotating.

This is a non-sensical question. If the sun exploded, you wouldn’t know until its light reached us.

Whatever decision you wanted to make for that 8-minute window wouldn’t happen because there simply wouldn’t be an 8-minute notification window. Light cannot travel faster than itself, nor can causality or information. You’ll find out the sun exploded eight minutes after it’s already done so.

That explains it all.

better question what would you do if a gamma ray burst was headed for the earth? we almost got hit by one last year.

Direct hit?

Grab your ankles and kiss your butt goodbye?

I don’t know, it’d depend on the magnitude of the assault, but it’d probably be a mass extinction event.

EDIT: Assault probably isn’t the right word. Oh well.

In simplistic terms, gravity travels at the speed of light. Whatever effect an increase or decrease of mass has will occur at light speed.

If the sun somehow went boom and shattered itself into quintillions of pieces that scattered all about, then yeah the Earth’s orbit would have some issues. But if the sun exploded yet kept its mass generally together, it likely wouldn’t be a significant issue.

The real threat is the loss of heat and any absurd radiation that overcomes the atmosphere enough to make humans realize they’re inferior.

The Earth would become a barren wasteland long before the Sun goes nova.

Tiktok and insomnia don’t mix well!

No, I’d be with my family

Wouldn’t matter what I do. It’s not like I’d be pondering and potentially regretting my last moments after I’m dead. Because I’d be dead.

I’d probably just sit there in utter shock, incapable of moving or speaking.

Considering it isn’t set to go supernova for millions upon millions of years, that’s not something I really think about, I guess.

Truth! Thankfully it’s just a scenario. Lol

Holy moly that video is wild hahaha I had no idea.

Probably find my cat, lay down in bed, open a video chat to everyone and wait for the end to come.

Our sun isn’t big enough to go supernova. It’s fate is to go red giant followed by white dwarf.

Yes because I want to see the forums go absolutely insane lol. Man, can you imagine? Everyone would just say their dirty laundry and talk crap so hard about each other without care.

Light would allow us to see the event in a few minutes, Other radiation can be slower, coronal mass ejections ( matter ) then takes 15 hours to several days to reach earth.

The sun going red giant, which will eventually reach out to the earths orbit, will take hundreds of millions of years to complete once the process starts.

The shock wave from a super nova travels at about 10% the speed of light. So maybe an hour after seeing it. No idea if we’d survive the light and other radiation that could reach us quicker.
