There is absolutely 0 way anybody is ever going to log into my account without it unless they can guess a 6-digit number within… what is it, like a 10 second window? And also know my email and password?
But now the game is nagging me to attach a phone (which I don’t even HAVE) to my account with the SMS thing. I know this is nothing new, BUT in the Prepatch, the extra slots appear in the bag whereas they didn’t before, they were confined to this tiny little button that was unobtrusive.
I wish that a keyfob was enough to just unlock the slots or at least hide the slots, because they’re kind of annoying, they take up UI space that I don’t really need. If I can’t get the 4 slots, fine. Could I at least be able to hide them?
I would replace that key fob with mobile authenticator. The SMS protect is helpful when your key fob dies, breaks or gets stolen by overly motivated chinese gold farmers and you try to regain access. I really don’t understand why anyone would refuse free security features. It costs you nothing and makes your account easier to recover in the absence of the authenticator.
While I am suspicious of that statement implies to say the least, you don’t need a cell phone for mobile authenticator or SMS protect. You can run BlueStack on your computer. However, if you happen to change your mind on the whole cell phone thing; Jitterbug is still in business and has smartphones that are simple to use.
96% of all Americans have cell phones with 81% owning smartphones. People aged 18-49 are even higher at 99%. I would have to imagine the percent of gamers who own cell phones or even smart phones approaches 100%.
Yea, that is why i find that highly suspect. I think I smell a troll. But in the event they were actually serious, I should have helped them overcome the hurdle of the big bad cell phone paywall.
I had a keyfob on my star wars the old republic account, somebody somehow got into my account and deleted all my characters all while my keyfob was in my desk drawer. I did get everything restored recently.
Never happened to my WoW account though but after seeing my star wars account hacked, I lost the 100% trust in the keyfob.
Basically it’s a back up redundancy. An Authenticator works great…but what if you lose it or it breaks? Believe it or not, the Authenticator isn’t foolproof either. I had someone break into my account back in August and if it wasn’t for SMS protect kicking in telling me some bloke got my password I wouldn’t have been able to stop it.
TL;DR it’s planned redundancy and an additional layer of protection
I didn’t not post that to doubt him. I posted it to show that there is really no reason for Blizzard to make an exception for such a small group. If he chooses not to own a cell phone then that is fine for him (I was like that for a while until I discovered mobile gaming), just don’t expect the world to bend over for your choice.
As the old saying goes “out with the old, in with the new”.
They’ve officially stopped supporting the keyfob. Oh, if you have one, it’s still valid, but they don’t sell them anymore.
So, the push now is for SMS support. I still think they’re going about it the wrong way. The locked slots is aggravating and an annoyance. That’s not the way to encourage people to keep their accounts secure. That’s a way to piss people off.
Hamstar, one flaw with that information. Not ALL phones support SMS for some reason. Mine is finicky and only supports SMS from certain companies.
And there is the privacy issue. Some people like to keep companies knowing as little about them as possible. And giving them your phone number reduces your privacy even more.
Some phone numbers and providers aren’t supported either. That’s what I found out when I tried to put in my number.
Some prepaid phones aren’t supported either, even though they can receive sms.
Edit: if blizzard wants my phone number, then take it. If they can’t use it because my number/provider aren’t supported, then give me the option to turn off the stupid backpack locks.
This is an issue they created, and I’m not about to download an emulator or buy a new phone/plan for their problem.
It is android emulation software. You can download it and run what is essentially an android device from your desktop. You can download the authenticator from Google play as well as use google voice or something similar. I believe Skype has a SMS phone number as well but I can not verify that with a high degree of certainty.
