If HPally is a melee healer then

I kept hearing that pally was melee healer which caused me to make one. However, why is it a “Melee healer” if our melee attacks don’t actually heal? The only way our melee attacks heal is if we take a specific talent that lets us heal during wings with our attacks.

Are we a “melee healer” because our mastery forces us to be someone near people to get maximum heals from mastery? OK, but that doesn’t mean we melee to heal.

Are we a “melee healer” because we have a heal that does an aoe cone in front of us to heal 5 people for 6500 hp? OK, but that doesn’t mean we melee to heal.

Aside from the wings talent, the only “melee healing” thing we have is a talent that makes crusader strike reduce the cd of holy shock.

I feel like this “melee healer” tag holy pallies have is false advertising and instead should be something along the lines of, “You need to be close to your heal targets”.

We are a melee healer because the majority of our damage comes from melee range, and our heals are amplified on closer targets. In order to play the top spec properly you need to execute your damage rotation to maximize healing. Your melee skills do not heal directly, but they reduce the cooldown of your heals, which then leads to more procs for your other heals.

Common talent picks right now are also holy avenger and sanctified wrath, which when popped together you do an absurd amount of damage for a healer for 30 seconds. With visions of perfection passive you can do this every 1.5 minutes, meaning 1/3rd of the time (optimally) you are essentially just another dps, at my iLvl (410) I am pulling 20k dps in those windows.

IDK what level you are but as with most classes they don’t come into their true light until 120. At 120 with some haste (10-20%) you play like a GCD locked DPS. It is very rewarding once you get used to it, but it is difficult to get used to. It does not feel “right” until you get your last 3 talents and some haste/crit. I would say that hpals have one of the lowest skill floors but also one of the highest skill ceilings as far as healers go.

My recommendation would be to create mouse over macros for all of your heals/utility, all healers should do this but I feel like damage focused healers like disc and hpal are required to.

If you play the glimmer of light trait, you have to spec in a way with avenging crusader which heals people from your attacks.

Also into the talent that makes crusader strike reduces the cooldown of holy shock by 1.5sec. So with the traits, talent, mastery forcing you to be in melee it pretty much feels like a melee healer because your attacks and positionning amplifies this feeling.

Ugh, no, you spec Sanctified Wrath when playing the glimmer build, it’s kind of a key talent since it allows you to spread glimmers around and have them ready for the big AOE. AC is only used with the standard build.

About the melee healer subject, well, I guess not everyone will have the same concept of what that means, it’s indeed mostly that in order to get full benefit of your kit you need to stand in melee and not that you literally heal by doing melee damage (I guess only AC indeed does that).

You bring good info, just missed one thing. The judgement azerite trait Never remember the name lol. I rarely see pally using it.

I never took the time to see what 3x of that trait can do with the AC but it could be something, maybe?

Yeah, Grace of the Justiciar, that’s the No1 trait for the “traditional” build and ideally try to stack 3 of them along with 1 Breaking Dawn. That’s kind of what everyone was doing before the GoL build came around.

I wouldn’t worry about glimmer build, in 9.0 it will be gone anyways.

Lol no, do not play that talent with glimmer

To me “melee healer” means we primarily heal in melee range but have a few skills that benefit from attacking in melee. So that means Crusader’s Might talent, Aura range, Mastery, Avenging Crusader talent, Light of Dawn.

We just have so many characteristics of our class that benefit from or require us to be in melee that melee healer I think is a very appropriate term.

We are not Warrior Priests of Sigmar, but we are ‘melee healers’. We just don’t heal THROUGH meleeing. Except for the one talent.

I know, it sucks.
