If Classic Succeeds Do You Think It’ll Change Retail Into More Like Classic?

I would hope so.

To be honest, I don’t care what happens in retail. And haven’t since 2010 (ish).

No and I don’t think it should.

If retail was 20% more classics would any of us go back? Probably not. It would just get in the way of peoples pet/mount/transmog farming.

Depends on how big of a success/failure Classic turns out to be. If the MAUs of Classic end up being 2-3x the number of Retail a year later then maybe.

You think players want ability pruning but they don’t…

Looking forward to the reversing of a lot of bad decisions after Classic becomes more popular then Retail. And then I might enjoy both games again.

I mean it wouldn’t hurt to shape a retail expansion into more like classic to try something new since subscriptions are going down anyways

Nah, they’ll just turn classic into wow 2 and it’ll evolve as a different game than retail. If anything retail could end up abandoned for the new project if things work out well enough.

Hopefully so, likely it wont.

That would take Blizzard doing a complete 180 on development principles instead of steering headlong toward Bethesda’s ideals of telling us what we want to play.

What would be your ideas for making Retail more of a Classic experience? Remove Looking for Dungeon/Raid. remove flying, squish the level cap back down to 60 and reintroduce the talent tree system?

It’s too late for retail.

What they should do honestly.

Retails money making is from the cash shop. If Classic is a huge success I can see WoW 2 happening and WoW being put on auto pilot with a small team that just introduces new pets and mounts and skins every so often.

The issue is ability pruning becomes necessary for balancing the more levels you add.

I mean, the rumor is next expansion is effectively wow 2.0. Level squish, major changes, etc.

We can only hope.

However, there’s a lot of things that have been introduced that there’s not really any turning back from, both important and not. Flying Mounts are an excellent example of the important side, millions of people have a lot of mounts and simply will not accept Blizzard grounding them permanently. Battle pets rank as unimportant, as either you like it or you just don’t really care.

Ultimately, though, I think too much has changed to properly turn back, even if Blizz wanted to. IMO the most you can ask for is gear meaning more, a talent tree reintroduction*, and a significant reduction in the importance of mythic+ dungeon gear. The first is a near certainty as Blizz has admitted the monty haul situation is a problem, the other two are far less likely.

*literally anything that makes progression through previous expansions mean anything would help at this point, otherwise they might as well cut the game at every xpac and start anew. The artifact growth is a motivation killer.

If classic succeeds blizzard would be better off phasing out retail and doing a revamped/remastered versions of all the expansions, knowing now what mistakes they had made for each one(hopefully) they could do things much better.

Alot of the work will already have been done for them on the storyline end of things which saves them a ton of money, and they can keep people happy at the same time. It is a win-win for them if classic is what the players crown as the better game.

This all the way.

The horse already bolted, it’s run for 18 miles down the busy highway and been hit by a truck, the crows have eaten all the meat and clean up crews have hosed off the rest.

Blizzard will never make a game as good as classic again. That original team is gone and so is the spirit of game developers. All modern games suck.

like other said if Classic gets and keeps 2-3x the MAU of retail I think they will see the writing on the wall and implement some Classic/vanilla design ideas into the next expansion. personally the story seems do disjointed to me these days I would prefer they just release a short 2-3 hour playtime story as v8.5 and wrap it up somehow. Evil is magically purged from Azeroth and everyone ends up singing kumbaya then fade to black or something.

Then spend the time and resources to make classic + content, my prefered option, a whole new timeline story based on the exact same 1.12 game engine, specs, talents just add new dungeons, raids, and zones … Still capped at level 60 with no item level bloat just better itemized stats for some non primary specs as new tier sets t3.1 if you will.

Or TBC and Wrath reboots over the next 6 years or so.
