I could accept sharding for the first couple weeks in the starter zones but would prefer not to. As said by others I worry that if it works well and they don’t get many complaints they will use it more… and honestly back a long time ago I told people we weren’t on a slippery slope. I was horribly wrong… and I don’t want to get on that slope again.
I doubt they will “confirm” sharding outside the first zones for quite a while.
I expect that they will get caught sharding outside the first zones and will make a statement about it being an unintentional bug which they will “fix”, and they will temporarily “fix” the bug.
Then someone else will catch them doing the same thing again, and they will again claim it was an unintentional bug which they will “fix” again, and they will temporarily “fix” the bug again.
This pattern will repeat itself numerous times.
Eventually, once Blizzard thinks enough people are “hooked” on classic or have a substantial amount of time invested and are therefore less likely to quit due to sharding, they may make a statement that sharding is “off by default” but it can and will “kick in” anytime, and ANYWHERE, the population exceeds a given threshold or they think the server load warrants sharding. They will, of course, not tell us what the population threshold is or what constitutes a “server load that warrants sharding”.
I’d rather be on a server with people who also think it’s a bad idea for Blizzard to ever use this technology. Starter areas or no, it’s just wrong imo.
Let’s add a condition to this scenario. If you choose to play on a labeled ‘no-shard’ server, you don’t get to complain about said lag, server queues, crashes, or population issues. Submitting tickets or posting forum complaints about these issues warrants an in-game suspension.
Lottery isn’t enough to get blizzard out of activisions claws. They have the scent of money and would mever let it go till the bones have been cracked for marrow.
The op’s suggestion is a logistical nightmare and I have no clue on how hard it would be to actually implement.
I’d likely play on the sharded server. I’m not in agreement with most changes people want, but as long as sharding only takes place in non-contested territory, I don’t really mind.
Deal, but one condition: Anyone on a sharded server gets the same penalty if they complain about lack of open world player interaction including but not limited to PVP/RP/Elite Quests.
I would play on the realm with no sharding. I would rather deal with queues, potential lag and random server crashes in the beginning than deal with even a minute of sharding.
Sharding ruins community in my opinion to a huge extent and those queues, lag and random sever crashes, etc., would only be temporary in the beginning that I would gladly deal with. Once sharding is in, I would bet money that Blizzard would eventually make it a permanent addition as time went on.
Honestly?
In order to deal with the self-caused issues related to first day/week tourism, they will need to allow many more initial players on each server than is “vanilla-like” so that when the tide recedes a proper level is reached. (It is all guesswork how many will leave of that initial number, but hey blizzard created the mess they are tasked with cleaning it up). Both the sharded and non-sharded option would need to be at that initial bloat level.
That said, IF both choices included a much higher initial population, I would choose non-sharded. I do not buy that it is a stability/lag issue, and sharding will do nothing to alleviate quest competition of items and mobs.
