My paladin is named after an LotR character and it is the same. The correct spelling is with the alt character in the name.
However this wouldn’t bother me at all if they did do it.

We need more special symbol option for our names. This would be a travesty.
None of my toons use alt characters, so I wouldn’t.
However, such a change would have to come with either the option of having a surname, or being able to stick a space, dash, or apostrophe in there.
I really want to make a Panda Mage called Chochang, but the name is taken on my server.
Sounds Norse. Perhaps Icelandic?
Yeah
I currently use alt characters so I can use a universal name for my characters instead of having each one with a different name. It would literally ruin 60% of my character names on my current server.
The only time I ever used an alternative character because the name was already taken (by a bloody gnome)
I honestly thought I was so original thinking up “Paddington the bear” when pandas came out, but apparently not.
Why exactly can’t they? And even if they didn’t, they could easily use the D3 system and tie our account to our bnet so if I wanted to have 20 characters named Nick I can, it’s just people would friendlist me under my btag.
You’d have to ask Blizzard. I would suspect it is possible but here we are 20 years down the development road of the WOW engine and it isn’t available yet.
How would you handle ingame mail though?
I’d prefer it for sure. I find it quite a hassle to deal with names that have multiple characters.
I get why people like them though, as it allows them to have names that can appear similar to what they want if it might already be in use.
I just dislike it when people do it for bizarre obscure names just to look cool.
Through the battletag? It could be deposited to the first character that logs in. It’s simple enough.
I would be pretty sad.
Wouldn’t affect me-- none of my characters use them.
I used to use ALT codes in my names… but after mailing my goodies to the wrong people a bunch of times back in cata… I decided it was better to get all my names nice and short and no ALT codes…
Its not like anyone cares what my character names are anyway so what is the point in having long or elaborate names really? Its better to get them nice and short and convenient for alt management.
It would suck. I’d end up having to come up with long random combinations of letters that in no way relate to a name.
And as an after thought its funny to see someone trying to pick on others for naming a character after lore when your own name has flex in it
They used to be banned on RP realms for a good 5-6 years. After a while, Blizz became pretty lax even though the policy still forebode them before they eventually removed the line about them not being allowed.
I do have a character with an accent, but that is only cause I used my daughter’s real name with said accent. If it got changed, I wouldn’t care that much. I’d probably just pick a new name for that character and it would make mailing to her easier lol.
Some of the names using accented characters are awful but…
It would be terrible if the name is meant to be spelled with accented characters.
Wouldn’t really care very much. I have 28 50s, with a dozen or so other lower alts and the only one with a special character in their name is a dwarf shaman named Stoutläger. The name was available without the umlaut, but just seemed to look better with it.
This isn’t so much about the “engine” as it is the UI overlay. They can code it and make it happen. This isn’t a case of “can’t” so much as they “havent”. Maybe they didn’t consider it, maybe it’s considered alongside other ideas… or they just have issues with players naming characters inappropriately that a last name system would only make it worse.
