Hi all, just a couple of questions on how best to play the Icecap build:
1). Traits -is Frostwhelp’s Indignation best for M+/aoe given the ability to quickly stack the mastery buff, and Icy Citadel for single target? Or some combination of the two?
2). Rotation - I’ve seen a video or two that states during Pillar to just dump as many runes/obliterate as possible to maximize the strength buff from Icy Citadel as well as Gathering Storm. To ignore Rime procs and overcap RP, etc. Is this the right way to play this spec? What if you don’t have Icy Citadel traits and just Frostwhelp? Would you still play this way during Pillar to at least maximize Gathering Storm during Pillar? Or would you use the “normal” priority system?
Thanks!
Frostwhelp and Icy Citadel are great for Mythic + yes.
For AoE, you really want to use Frostscythe as much as possible. It synergises extremely well with Icecap. You only need a single hit from Frostscythe to crit to trigger the CDR from Icecap. This means that the probability to trigger Icecap increases with the number of targets when you use Frostscythe! You always use Frostscythe at 2+ targets.
You don’t need to care that much about capping RP, it’s more important to have your runes recharging.

whats better 3x Frostwhelp or 3x frozen tempest for aoe
1x Frozen tempest is always a must. The effect is simply so powerful. Other than that, I’m not 100% sure. I think Frostwhelp wins out in AoE situations with Icecap.

Is there a different stat priority for Icecap? I feel like the m+ users i’ve seen stack more haste than BoS build. I really want to try this spec, and have dozens of gear options, but every sim I run puts BoS ahead (on Dungeon Slice) by at least 1.2k dps.
There is yes. Mastery is still king for AoE but haste is much better for Icecap.
i haven’t reached endgame as i’ve only recently renewed my sub, but i really get the feeling going by forum posts and chatter in the in-game chat channels that all this sim stuff has really killed a lot of the “fun” of the game.

Dungeon slice is generally a lot more ST than dungeons. Icecap does well on large AoE and is competitive in dungeons. I still think Breath is better but it’s not nearly as clearly cut as before.
I know Vision of Perfection has been hard to sim for some specs, has this been the case for Icecap? How is it shaping up compared to other top major essences?
It’s 3.3% behind life-force with BiS gear. Shouldn’t be an issue with perfection and icecap.

I wouldn’t say it has killed a lot of the fun.
It does require more work to figure out upgrades though as you can get them from pretty much anywhere.
Due to titanforging and random gem sockets it’s incredibly hard to look at an item and tell if it’s an upgrade. Sometimes an item 40+ ilvl higher can be a downgrade (feels really bad).
Raidbots has made it incredible simple and convenient though.
Not sure how accurate it is, but I’ve been simming with dungeon slice and using that as my template. I’m seeing my dps go up, but I think more haste “felt” better, even if it was a dps loss. May try switching up my gems and seeing how that feels.

In order for Icecap to be optimal, what essences are targeted?
Life force major, crucible and focusing iris minors.
