Arcanite Reaper is listed as a pre-raid BiS 2h option, no mention of Ice Barbed Spear.
If it’s on people’s BiS lists that people look at to decide what items they want, you’re probably still going to sell it, even if it’s not significantly better than an item that’s much easier to acquire.
AR also made Mortal Strike STUPID OP back in the day too. I remember getting 1-2 shot on my mage main by MS warriors with AR crits (when blink was on CD anyway).
The difficulty of killing Korrak and completing the first version of the quest is being overrated here…
Back then, because he was the key to the quests Korrak was like the first thing the raid went for in the center. The “difficulty” was all in how much the other faction bothered you while yall zerged him. But he wasn’t insanely hard or anything.
I can’t think of a decent source right now. The issue with the current BiS lists is that they’re one of the two:
Recent lists taking into account the 1.12 itemization but trying to cover every class and making mistakes in most of them
Dating from pservers with progressive itemization
You’d probably have to look around class-specific resources like the class discords if you want to have accurate BiS lists, if you want to get something like this (hunter example):
I can’t really recommend any specific site or list atm outside of the class discords. Even class-specific websites I’ve found have completely wrong information.
I say this as an Axesmith from vanilla: weaponsmithing was ALWAYS garbage. Outside of maybe a few thorium brotherhood recipies none of them were worth the arcanite needed to make them.
They were pretty clear, Vanilla 1.12 will be served. This is what they are making, they don’t want to serve vanilla version 1.1kinjiryu whether we agree or not this is the vanilla they serve buy it or don’t.
I got my Arcanite Reaper after the Ice Barbed Spear came out. And I still got the Reaper.
Getting in to AV was not easy for me, getting that quest done was not easy for me. AV was all over the map, and I couldn’t commit the time to run one, much less hope that the others in the party would actually help me in getting the quest done.
So, instead, I farmed up 650g and bought the mats to mail off to a complete stranger to get my Reaper made, and I was completely happy with it – it was the last weapon I ever got on my Warrior. Dropped Crusader on it and let it go.
Of course, the Reaper has so much history to it vs the IBS. The Reaper is an iconic weapon of WoW. Nobody else knows what the IBS even is any more.
During WoD, I stumbled upon the Reaper recipe in the AH for 3000g, so I bought it on my horde DK. Then I went out, farmed the mats, and made one just so I could transmog in to it. (I don’t think transmog is Account Bound across factions, is it? If so “oops”.) But, either way, it was a nice diversion. Running around Silithus for Arcane Crystals.
Bottom line, IBS was not universally available to everyone. And, besides, Axes > Polearms anyway.
It is now, but originally you had to actually have the item you wanted to transmog to on the specific character you were transmogging on (which was why void storage existed originally).
It might not have been until Legion that we had the account wide unlocking of appearances and easy access to transmog that we have now.
