I5-11400f or i9-10900f?

Looking to upgrade my system and fairly set on going with intel 10th or 11th gen because of local prices and availability, and I’m trying to decide if it’s worth paying a bit more for an i9-10900f as opposed to just getting an i5-11400f. Of course other things I will be doing with my computer besides gaming are a consideration too, but I’m curious about WoW–classic and Shadowlands.

What do you think, should I see much benefit from a 10900f over 11400f? Looks like single core performance of 11th gen Intel is stronger, even though the clock is lower, and I’ve read that there’s little benefit for WoW to go beyond 4-6 cores.

If you are playing WoW only, 11400F (or non F if you gonna stream). Go 10900F (or non F for streaming) if you do heavy stuffs like video editing and 3D rendering.

Make sure you get a good motherboard along with it as well. VRM throttling will happen for those low quality boards. Some boards even gives your CPU unlimited power limit that gives even more performance. Usually those more expensive boards allows it.

Always check reviews before buying.

Thank you, that’s along the lines of what I was thinking, but it’s just so difficult to get a proper idea of relative performance. Like on paper 10900F (or KF even–I can get that for close enough price) is faster, especially with increased power limit, but yet for some relevant tasks like Photoshop rendering tests or web browsing, the two are so close in practical applications. Just makes me wonder if I would even see any noticeable difference between them.

I only play WoW for gaming, otherwise I do a bunch of photo processing with Adobe software, CaptureOne Pro, a few others, and then basically web browsing. CO Pro seems to be more GPU acceleration focused.

The more things you do at the same time, it makes more sense to get CPU with more cores.

Remember to get a good cooler for 10900KF as well. It can get toasty. I recommend 360mm coolers like Arctic Cooling Liquid Freezer II 360 or EK AIO 360 D-RGB for high end CPUs these days. Corsair H150i Elite Capellix if you like better looking bling bling.

I’d highly recommend the 10900f over 11400f. Personally I went from a 6 core to an 8 core with a bit of hesitation but glad I took the 8 10700.

I’ve read that there’s little benefit for WoW to go beyond 4-6 cores.

That depends on what you do. Shadowlands zones scale much better than older zones. I don’t see this trend reversing.

More activity can benefit more from more cores. Ashran for example is going to benefit from more cores than a 5 man dungeon.

F just means it doesn’t have the built-in GPU. I would definitely get a K, though.

Yup. You will lose Intel Quick Sync Video of you go for models with F. Its good for video transcoding.
