I wish WoW was more... Grim-Dark

I…I… just don’t see it but I work with a guy, who is a self-proclaimed coward when it comes to “darker” themes in gaming… I won’t pretend I understand the reasoning. I’m not against the arachnophobia thing, because my sister is horrified of them and I’ve experience the “fear” that may be irrational to me, but you can’t change what is going on in someone’s head.

It’s a slow road to walk trying to understand all these issues lol

I can’t judge folks for phobias.

I got one of vacuums. Not even joking. As a kid I was TERRIFIED thinking my toes would get sucked up and they’d get shredded. Aaaaaand that kinda stuck with me even as an adult in their 30s lol.

Well that and they’re just too loud. But that’s the autism talking.

I just used The Wild Robot clip because yes even tho the baby is actually alive, the cute animation mixed with nature being nature just sucker punches you sometimes lol

Someone didn’t actually pay attention to the lore and cinematics. TWW and the story of NP is actually pretty dark as a story complete with body horror to boot.

Just because it doesn’t go out of its way to grossly exaggerate blood and guts doesn’t make the source dark AF. Like just look at what happened to the still living but dethroned Queen bug or the fall of Dalaran and Khadgar…or even sentient robots whose been forced into literal slavery only to “die” and reboot themselves back into a servant state again.

Vaccums? It really is strange the tricks our minds play on us. I bet you nothing but wood flooring, huh?

Ahh… I remember watching the never ending story and seen Gamork… I was HORRIFIED of the dark and I remember going down the basement, my dad decided to turn the light off on me and all I saw was darkness and 2 green light that looked like eyes. I FREAKED OUT. Luckily for me that fear has passed, but there is something about that Wolf that still freaks me out to this day. lol.

Yeah the brain does all sorts of whackadoo things all while thinking “IM HELPING” lol.

I can at least laugh about this phobia. The other ones I don’t share publicly.

A lot of the dark stuff is kinda ‘on the side’ rather than upfront and in your face.

Basically everyone in Wrath saw the horrors of the Scourge first-hand.

But a lot of the ‘dark’ stuff in TWW, is relegated to side quests. Particularly in Azj’Kahet.

It’s still there, a decent amount of it, just sidequest stuff rather than a main point of the story.

The story is more about manipulation and corruption, not too much darkness/horror. It’s also constructs (Earthen), so probably feels less horrible as a result lol. But they are living too.

Probably the most dark thing of TWW, is that Titans aren’t to be trusted. And most of what we know about Azeroth might actually be a lie.

The implications lead to some very bad stuff.

Oh you meant atmosphere. I thought you meant in story where no matter what our choices, evil will always win because the world is a horrible, wretched place where the only escape is death except not really. Kind of like Berserk.

They tried grim-dark. They sucked at it… Repeatedly.

They tried chill, they also sucked at that for the main-plot, minor plots work fine tho.

In fairness. Its a tad hard to be both grim dark and rated T for teen.

It’s like trying to make Hellraiser pg 13. Ya just can’t.

See this is how I know you guys don’t read quests, because otherwise you wouldn’t have missed the fact that the spiders paralyze their victims and mummify them alive to them use their corpses as flesh puppets.

As Anub’arak would say.

kinky

Did you just ignored the pustule covered inner basement where it’s all gone to hell or do you just ignore things to make a point as a hobby?

Hm, it does make me wonder if WoW was M rated. How far would they go? Probably not very far.

Drustvar zone from BFA did a good job of grim-dark. The expansion was meh but that zone was one of my favorites. Had a kind of Wickerman/Blair Witch vibe. Also there was a Cthulhuesque cult in Stormsong valley.

I made a similar post and it was flagged and removed. I’m surprised this is still up to be honest. I also tend to agree…it’s about time for some actual adult themed content. This Disney movie is getting old and I’m not a babysitter.

I totally agree, but with WOW’s sub count not being as high as it used to be, they’re /desperate/ to appeal to everyone and every age. They want to bring in the new generation of kiddos and appeal as heavily to investors as possible. So they’re probably just going to make it more kid friendly.

Heaven and angels in Diablo are definitely not kindhearted or good. They’re about order, keeping things pure; Tyrael is one of the exceptions. Demons and angels in Sanctuary are two sides of the same coin with the humans in between and a mix of both, capable of both good and bad.

It’s funny to me the goriest most hardcore scene depiction I’ve ever seen in 20 years of WoW came in Dragonflight when a Djaradin chef had a horde of dragons chopped up in little pieces with dragon parts hanging off meat hooks and cleavers. Truly a gruesome scene unlike anything else in WoW. Like walking into a mass murder scene, and everybody said that expansion was for little kids lmao

In brackenhide the gnolls have the tuskarr tied to posts used for target practice among other things.

New rogue glyphs:

  • Throwing popsicle stick
  • Ribbon garrote
  • Glitter bomb

About as far as every other popular M-rated RPG, which is to say: not far. Things would be basically the same, they’d just be slathered with blood, swearing, and boobs.

People don’t actually want mature games, they just want games that their parents wouldn’t let them have as kids.

Everyone knows kids love abattoirs!
