I was forced to get the Blizzard Authenticator

I just downloaded the authenticator and changed passwords because yesterday I was warned my account got logged into from a different location while I was still logged in. This would have been my 3rd account hacked ever since my 1st one was hacked back in cataclysm, had the person gotten full control. Lucky they didn’t but I guess I learned my lesson to finally download the authenticator.

Authenticators are nice.

I’ve never been hacked and I’m quite sure that is due in no small part to the authenticator.

I’m also a network security guy though, and am careful online to begin with.

Glad the fellow didn’t get control of your account! I need to hear more updates about your belf adventures.

I’ve got the physical authenticator. Had it for 10 years and it’s still going strong.

I hope I didn’t just jinx the battery on it.

You’ll forget all about it in no time. I never have to enter a code with it. Ever.

I mean I’m careful to begin with but I guess I just get unlucky with these hackers so I’m gonna need that extra step of security protection with the authenticator. And for the blood elf adventures I might continuing that series tomorrow.

3 attempts is far too long to wait to add an authenticator. Should have added one after the first hack IMO.

Yeah but I can be stubborn sometimes.

Kind of curious how they keep getting the password. Might I suggest a password protector and anti-virus program? Avast has a boot time scan. I run one every time I log off. Kaspersky password protector is actually not bad.

I actually had an anti-virus program just several weeks ago before it expired, I can’t remember which one it was though. Might be time to start it up again then.

Mine lasted from 2009 - 2016 or so. RIP Original WoW authenticator.

I say yes. malware also not bad one I hear.

You didn’t learn your lesson the first time?

Were you that kid who kept putting his hands on the hot stove, getting burned all the while going ‘Hot’…???

Also check to make sure the Password you use is not similar to any other password. Make sure your Email address isn’t hacked either. (That is the primary starting point for most hacks on the internet these days. Professional hackers will hack Emails, then sell them off to other nefarious persons to exploit.)

Also, Blizzard added the option to update your Secret Question and Answer, make sure to give it the XKCD treatment:

Not having an authenticator is… Not smart

You can set it to require a code at every log in

Reminder if they got in, then your password is also compromised. You should change that password everywhere you used it to something you’ve never used before. Better yet get a password manager.

I was hacked in…gosh, BC or Wrath. I remember how devastating that was. The moment the physical authenticator came out, though, I immediately bought one. My account hasn’t been touched since. And I still have it at home, the baby Corehound in it at all. That sense of security was worth the, at the time, $7 or whatever.

Wow!! I have to say it took you a while to lean that lesson!

My account was hacked back in Cata when I was new and this toon was only 72. I put the authenticator on that day, and have never had a moment’s trouble since!

My account got hacked several times between Vanilla and WotLK. Never happened again after getting an Authenticator. Totally worth it.

If you don’t have it… get it. 100%.

Good move. I’ve had one since they first became available.

Can you pop out the old battery and put a new one in or does that mess up the counter?
