I think MMOs might just not be for me anymore the way they are today

I’ve been having a difficult time as of late scratching my MMO itch.

Everything just feels a bit too “theme park”-ish to me now a days. This applies to both of the primary games I have been trying to get to stick, World of Warcraft, and FFXIV. I’ve played both for a very long time ingerchangeably (WoW in its beta days, FFXIV during its...days that we will shall not mention, but more relevant, when it relaunched as ARR).

They both have great content in and of itself.

The quests are better than they used to be back in the old days. FFXIV has a long and interesting story that keeps you strung along, and WoW is definitely leading the charge on the questing experience in terms of variety (although I can’t say I’m excited to do more daily bombing missions the nth expansion in a row, these don’t really ever feel new to do since TBC or so).

Their raid content is generally challenging (if you do the challenging raid content, of course), and gets you to work as a team with different roles in order to fell cool beats/baddies. Dungeons are decent side content, and in WoW’s case today, an awesome ever scaling activity that you can actually compete in at Blizzcon which is cool.

They both have a great fashion end-game, so you can tweak your character to look whatever which way you want. Today I’m sporting the ever so stereotypical t2 cuz I was super bored even though it’s beyond overdone, but I have that choice to go back and wear this awesome set if I feel like it! In FFXIV I get a more “realistic” character model with lots of high fantasy Final fantasy-like armor to mix and match.

But beyond that...

I just feel like neither game feels like an MMO. I feel like maybe my MMO itch isn’t being scratched because they just aren’t MMOs anymore.

I mean I realize it sounds silly, because I can queue for a group, get in to a dungeon and play with other players. Online game. Right?

I don’t know. The game worlds of the two prominent MMOs just doesn’t feel compelling, and in WoW’s case, not anymore. I feel like we might as well just be logging in to an online lobby like Overwatch or Heroes, and queue in to whatever activity we are wanting to do, be it Mythic+, PvP, or dungeons.

I’m still just getting my bearings with this expansion but I’m only 1-2 weeks old with it and unfortunately it’s not changing that feeling. I get that there ARE things to go out and do...but I don’t really feel like doing so? So maybe that my problem. What I want anymore is not what the top 2 MMOs do. Meh.

Sucks...in the end I might just go back to single player games :/, as much as I I love the vibe of playing a game besides tons of other people playing their own unique characters. it seems “big mysterious world with lots of secrets to explore” is relegated to offline games now.

Try ESO. I was away for a year, recently returned and for the first time since the Unimaginatives took over WoW, I am enjoying... in an addictive way... playing an MMO again.

I enjoy FF, but not in the same way at all.

I also love SWTOR but mainly because of the great storytelling.

ESO will satisfy. And they have mastered world scaling. Your character maintains the sense of progression AND can play anywhere in the game at any level (except Cryodill, you have to be 10)

Definitely heard a thing or two about ESO, and I’m ashamed to admit I haven’t given it a stab yet. I guess it just feels so daunting to start a fresh MMO when I have two that I’ve put so much time in to my characters already...sunk cost and all...

I’ll look in to it though.
ESO is worth a shot. I never spent a crazy amount of time there but the questing alone makes the game worth trying. I updated ESO last night so maybe this evening I will log back on and see whats going on.
I've been spending a lot of time going back to old single player RPGs that I loved lately.
The problem with Internet forums is that people abuse them like it's group therapy.
I agree fully here with this post. WoW certainly feels less like an MMORPG now and more like a theme park ride where Blizzard takes you everywhere on the rails to see their special attractions.

Sure, those attractions might look great and have some fun content in them, but the opportunity for players to step off the rails and explore on their own is basically gone. Customization is at an all-time low, player choice is at an all-time low, nothing feels significant anymore outside of extreme top-end achievements (Cutting Edge, Gladiator, etc.)

I'm sure plenty of people enjoy what the game is now and that's fantastic but I feel as if WoW has lost a lot of the magic over the years. What made this game so enticing for many of us was the allure of a world to explore, characters to develop, lore to unravel, etc. and unfortunately there isn't too much of that now.

WoW is just a different game now, and judging by how many people have quit I feel as if it's not for the better.

Don't laugh but if you like that sort of thing I can recommend a few exceptionally excellent games from days gone by.

Baldurs' Gate (and progeny) (the first game I played where your toon actually wore the armor depicted on your paper doll, among other firsts...) MODDABLE and oh so much fun -- has multiplayer options) Happily, there are enhanced editions for each of the BG games through IWD. Terrific fun.

KOTOR 1 and 2 (the story in 2 is excellent but gets a little muddy in the middle) Simply mezmerizing, fun fun fun combat is turn-based but the real gem here is the epic story. ZOMG what an amazing couple of games. (Happily the online version stopped trying to be WoW and reverted to what Bioware does best)

System Shock: Due for a re-release update of the original (huzzah) this was the single most addictive spg I played for a long time. This game is immersive, evocative and just plain great gaming fun. There are several versions floating about, the original was a DOS-based one. The creators are re-creating that masterpiece with updated graphics, sounds, etc and I believe if they stick to that plan, the re-release will be amazing.

Those are the games that stand out in my memory as being exceptional fun.
WoW at it's best was like maybe a 6 on a scale of 1 to 10 for actually being an MMORPG.

It's probably more of a 3 or 4 now tho since many of the elements of an MMORPG were removed such as customization of character with no more actual talent tree.

The issue I see is that they've changed the game to appeal to younger players (cuz let's face it, the people who've played since launch, or at least Wrath are in their mid to late twenties to thirties now). And appealing to younger players means twitchier, more shallow game play and latching onto trends rather than stick to what made the game great to begin with.

I'm 35 now, I was 20 when WoW came out. I guess I'm just old. I find myself playing vanilla more than anything else now.
"Sandbox" MMO's don't exist anymore

I think it's just WoW. I play other MMOs that have not turned themselves inside out and I rarely go anywhere in these games without seeing other players around.

FF14: full server lots of people all day all night.
ESO: everywhere I go in the game, there are players and lots of them. Many have come to Tamriel after being bored out of their boots in Azeroth.
SWTOR: excellent storytelling appeals to me and many others.

In WoW, most servers, cities, places to go -- ghost towns.

WoW isn't fun anymore. It feels like a job. And it's unrewarding, which makes time spent in game a waste.
if you want to play a sandbox MMO go play BDO the endgame is awful for new players though it will take you at least 3 months to even be remotely competitive
The game and MMOs in general are just shallow now.
There's barely any stats, versatility is uninteresting. There's barely any talents. Warmode is pointless because everyone is all funneled to the same spots all on purpose with no where else to explore or go, you just bounce from pin to pin on the map and hope 10 people don't jump you.

Other ARPGs are actually more engaging than WoW is now. Grim Dawn, Path of Exile, Diablo 3. You'll feel more rewarded and powerful spending time on those games, which I never thought I'd see. You'll actually want to try builds and the scaling makes sense.

What is there to try with WoW? Everything is inconsequential and sanitized as to "not be too over powered". It makes playing the game feel pointless.

Not to derail the topic too much but Path of Exile is such a fantastic game. Have almost a couple thousand hours in it. There's some problems I have with it and ironically enough I'm on a bit of a burnout from it right now due to how much I've played but it really is a great ARPG. So much customization and fun builds to try, cool items, developers that regularly communicate and care about the players, etc.

Loads of fun.
Be careful, the shills can sense any disturbance in the Blizz force and will defend their masters ‘til their dying breath.

And it's free to play.

The buck stops here on Blizzard's riding the wave of Warcraft lore popularity. The new players don't care about what happened in Reign of Chaos or Warcraft 2 or they simply don't know because they weren't alive and all the new writing is questionable. The movie bombed and the events of WoD bombed.
There is nothing for the game to stand on anymore, it's just on E-sport life support apparently.

I've started playing through the Witcher 3 again.

I need a new drug. One that won't make me sick.
For me it's been the slow erosion of control in how my time spent rewards me.

I'm just tired of all the extra uncertainty they've interjected. I want a game where I can reliably work towards bettering my character in a concrete way that doesn't take a third party program to prove to me that my character is, in fact, better by x%, which for the life of me I never feel. With the exception of weapons... which are so scarce it's just daft.

Yeah it's just amazing that people on this video game forum would be fans of this game - and not fans of ESO.

Clearly anyone who isn't bashing Wow and pumping ESO is a shill...

*rolls eyes*

... or wait.. is it shills from ESO that are posting here? *spooky tinfoil music*
