The worst part of being a mage is getting caught in a stun. Blink has always been that remedy. At least with blink I can survive a warriors storm bolt or a subt rogue. Eating those stuns is death. Can someone more experience chime in here
If you are playing fire, Blazing Soul will feel great, gives you a shield every blink as well.
Couple that with prismatic cloak and that 50% wall for 2 vs magic will also greatly increase your survivability vs caster burst like bolts or frost mage shatter to give an example.
There is literally nothing wrong with running it 24/7.
If you are doing rated 2s/3s. Securing poly will be more difficult without it, but not impossible, cordinate with a team mate if needed.
As for arcane, with alter time being 30 second CD + normal/blink its essentially same thing with way more survivability. You just don’t have Dbreath/ring like fire to setup CC so it will be a bit tricker.
As for frost, Glacial insulation and ice floes really don’t hold up to Blazing/30 second alter time.
I’m sure you could run either of them and get used to it they are just lackluster talents and you don’t gain survivabiltiy/defense.
Outside non-rated content you’ll be A-OK my dude.
Smalls tip I can add if your fire.
Practice not overlapping Blazing soul shield + your normal shield. Reactive use shield for incoming damage and blink to soak more/renew shield or vice versa.
Didn’t have any issues going to 2500-2600 in S1 for glad without shimmer if those are your concerns. Ya some games feel awful but if your playing in LFG I hate sitting kidneys myself wondering if this is one I die in because of healer/partner inexperience and or panic.
Plus it is pretty hilarious to see rogues open up with MFD kidney bomb when they see relentless on a mage. Will always give you a good chuckle to blink and watch them waste those cds.
Yes, I’ve always run Relentless + Blazing Soul
Shimmer only works if you need periodic high movement (every 50 seconds). If you’re using the spell on cooldown, you can actually cover more distance in a minute via Blink than Shimmer due to the shorter cooldown you trade off for Blink.
I wish frost had master of time instead of glacial insulation. I’d pick master of time over shimmer any day but as frost I feel shimmer is unfortunately the best option in pvp compared to the others.
Edit: Now I’m thinking of an ice floes ray of frost or gs build… Dang OP got me thinking maybe…
Ice Floes out performs Shimmer on a DPS standpoint because it lets you cast on the move every 20 seconds and holds more charges.
Oh I’m sure, but I’m speaking more from a PvP standpoint where dps alone isn’t enough - the ability to quickly shift positions is incredible. High dps means nothing if I had no mobility left to get away from the mythic raid rogue shadow dancing me with no ice block. The blink there saves me - however… The utility conduit I plan to get for mage regardless is the one that reduces blinks CD and at max rank it puts blink to 10s and shimmer at 20s recharge IIRC (or thereabouts?) and at that point I think even as frost regular blink will be just too good. I’m probably going to go ice floes for pvp once I get that conduit (unless if they by the grace of god give frost master of time too).
Oh I apologize, I was talking from a PvE standpoint.
u can even use 2 charges when u know there is a movement phase , and keep 1 charge just in case.
I agree, personally I’ve never picked Shimmer. There is absolutely no reason why the talent should come with a trade off. Plenty of other classes and specs have talents that simply give a movement enhancing ability a second charge (or lower cooldown, etc) without nerfing the base ability. Paladins’ Cavalier talent is a perfect example that comes to mind.
Of course part of my decision was also based on the fact that I play Arcane and Slipstream is just too attractive of a QoL choice to pass up.
You still Blink further if you’re moving for a minute since Shimmer at best allows 4 uses in a minute and Blink allows 5. After that Blink keeps performing better because of its shorter cooldown.
As long as Shimmer is on cooldown, and you need the spell, then you’re better off with Blink. Shimmer will only do better if you’re not moving till both charges are ready and then have to suddenly move a lot (assuming nothing can stun you)
