Not to be completely contrarian, but the writing - to me - feels more loose and dissonant. As if we’re still waiting for the entire orchestral movement to finish.
There was no overture; we don’t know all the themes and motifs yet to be played. So we’re getting to experience it as it is played. And I don’t know where it’s going, yet.
Edit to add: and I’m so jazzed I made a musical allusion beneath BOC!
Am I the only one who read this and is actually understanding it as: “Waahhh! I m gonna supporte a genocidal maniac cause I wanna be a rebel! Cause I m eeeeedgy!”?
Yes. Many times yes.
I stand with Sylvanas.
Saurfang lost my support when he spared Anduin and was willing to let the Alliance kill hundreds of Horde just for the off chance they would kill Sylvanas.
This.
If he had challenged Sylvanas, or just served while he undermined her when she stepped out of line I’d be a lot more sympathetic to Saurfang. But just bailing on the Horde during it’s biggest war yet just because he didn’t like the methods used to kill comes off as really lame.
I guess this is what happens when you make a character based on memes.
Every character has personally murdered thousands. At minimum. Get off your high horse.
Oh, boo. Judging me again for characters I personally like, because I dont like the white knights in stories. Tell you what, my other favorite characters outside WoW contain, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy and Deadpool. Oh you know what my favorite character in GoT was Cersei, and I loved Light Yagami in Death Note. Just to name a few, I must be a awful person for liking intersting and complex characters huh. Do I know they are villains or anti heroes? Yes. Can I seperate fiction from real life? Yes. Do I like good story telling? Yes. Should I seek counceling because of this? …
Sylvanas, sure gives about herself, but she’s also been smart she knows, she needs the Forsaken, she knows the Forsaken need the Horde. The things shes doing now are not in line with those actions, shes doing “random acts of bad” just to push Saurfangs narative nothing more to it. Everything that happened in BfA is because of oh lul Saurfang good, Sylvanas baaad zukzuk. We’re not even getting any of Sylvanas actions directly its always a second hand source so any character development wer’e supposed to swallow is happening of screen. At least when Daenerys burned down Kings Landing we saw her character being brought to that moment nothing of that is happening in WoW all focus is on that orc. And that is what I dont stand for.

Actually, the Horde hated Garrosh long before Theramore, and it’s pretty far down on the list of reasons why anyone in it wanted him deposed. He was an orc supremacist that threatened nearly every other race with annihilation if they didn’t do as he commanded while simultaneously working toward Orcish purity. And he hadn’t even proved himself a capable leader before ever becoming Warchief, since it was Saurfang that carried him through the entire Northrend campaign while he stomped around a giant map on the floor of Warsong Hold, kicking over models and yelling about how cool he was. If anything, destroying Theramore was his only competent tactical decision, and the thing that really ground the Horde’s gears over it was that he forced the Sunreavers to abuse their position within the Kirin Tor to accomplish it under the threat of–you guessed it!–their entire race’s annihilation, and then left them to the wolves after.
To her credit, Sylvanas at least pretends to support the Horde’s diversity to the public at large, made a real, mostly successful effort to get the Alliance off Orgrimmar’s doorstep, denied Lordaeron to the Alliance even in defeat, and dedicated forces in the Eastern Kingdoms to protect Quel’thalas from the Alliance’s advance through the Arathi Highlands.
Yes, her own shadowy goals are ultimately sinister and, yes, she really only sees the Horde as a means to her own ends, but she at least tries to maintain a surface appearance of caring about the well being of the entire Horde, which is far more than Garrosh ever did and it’s why Saurfang’s rebellion consists of about a half dozen people at the moment.
I agree. She’s always been my favorite character and one of the only original horde leaders left.
Its not bad writing
it is actually quite compelling
I think that is why many are frustrated because we all want to know sylvannus’ intentions.
if there is criticism to be made, I would focus more on the way the story has been delivered
Rather than giving us little bits over tiny patches that stretch a year long, I would have preferred releasing conclusive chapters for each .5 patch.
We still have so many unanswered questions. Voljins whispers, Sylvannus, Saurfang, Xal atath. We should have found out voljins whispers within the first couple months of xpac. Saurfang should have already wrapped up, and we should be further along with xal alatah, sylvannus and calia
Blizzard’s been having awful writing since they started, trust me…It’s bad writing. Have you ever read any of their books?
It’s not JUST this current expansion writing, though.
You are reading generic fantasy targeted at youth.
The writing is appropriate
Who says it’s targeted at youth…?
Even middle schoolers or high schoolers could write better than the drivel that’s from their books / lore from the game thus far.
Sure the overall story is amazing, but there’s so many terrible small things here and there that only half make sense at best.
It is actually an interesting topic.
Video game story telling in general is sub par. And I don’t think the industry has found an effective way to tell a complete and engaging story.
I don’t understand what you mean by
It is a pretty basic story line. I can only stand to reason it is because of sparse details released very far apart which create gaps in understanding character motivations.
I dunno, I think a lot of their story is really cool in general. The issue is when they get down to the smaller things they just write things that don’t make any sense and just leave them there without any explanation or we have have characters that constantly just change direction from what everyone expect them to do with no solid reasoning behind it.
It just feels like they let anyone they want write something about the character’s / storyline and it just seems messy.
Even though they were supposed to be the “bad guys” in that cinematic, that really made me want to roll a female Undead. Props to those girls for even trying to take on what’s essentially 2 raid bosses.
Funny tidbit about that was that a lot of people forget that the first port he set up was completely destroyed by the kvaldir.
The whole “Garrosh did nothing wrong” sentiments are mostly from memes or the orc warrior counterparts to the generic male human paladin poster.
The main reason I will be unable to justify supporting anyone other than Sylvanas currently is the underhanded, cowardly, and treasonous way that Saurfang and Bane are going about undermining her.
Why not issue a Mak’Gora? If she declines, or loses and does not yield the position of Warchief, than she is the one who has stepped outside the process, traditions, etc. Then she can be portrayed as a traitor or whatever. But as it is, I’m expected to throw my support behind people who run to the Alliance in secret to solve internal Horde problems, in the name of “honor”. That’s a terrible precedent to set, and is actually extremely dishonorable.
Plus, didn’t Bane’s father die doing that same thing? It would rhyme, it would be like poetry. /S.
Blizz sucks at writing.
