I Saw a Multi-boxer Yesterday

I was killing Murlocs in Westfall. He was killing Sand Crawlers. I waved at him. He waved at me. I headed down the beach with a song in my heart.

The question I have in mind is, did every one of his toons wave simultaneously?

That’s what matters

A multi-boxer healed me today. I thanked them and immediately proceeded to accidentally overaggro multiple mobs. I ran away and all of the mobs went onto them and they all died.

I came across a druid multi boxer while leveling in feralas. It was like being shot with a moonfire Gatling gun.

I saw one while farming Frostmaul giants in Winterspring the other day. Takes me like a minute or so to kill one (59-60 elites), and then I have to eat, before moving on to the next one.

Up walks an alliance mage with like 6-8+ mages in tow. He casts frost bolt x8 or whatever, one-shots a giant. Moves to the next one and one-shots it, repeat, until he’s mowed through all the spawns. He looked at me and /laughed. I /frowned at him. I have zero respect for cheaters. They’re just bottom of the barrel.

By definition multiboxing isn’t cheating.

By whose definition? Blizzard’s lawyers, who are paid to define it in such a way that maximizes profits? True.

But it’s cheating according what I would argue is the most common definition. Google defines it as “act dishonestly or unfairly in order to gain an advantage, especially in a game or examination.” I was competing with that alliance multiboxer for resources. He paid real life money to gain a huge advantage over me. It’s pay-to-win, which I would argue is unfair and thus cheating.

When you make and sell your MMO, don’t allow boxers.

No, just Blizzard, who wrote the rules. Multiboxing is allowed. Therefore, it’s not cheating.

No, he leveled up 6-8+ characters to (I’m assuming) level cap. He earned his advantage over you through effort.

If someone robs a bank, and bribes the cops to look the other way, they are still a thief.

Except he can put them all in a group on follow and level them up with roughly the same effort as leveling one character.

Robbing a bank would be against the rules.

Multiboxing is not.

Except no. Questing is harder on a box. If you do gather quests you have to kill 2, 3, 4, or 5x as many of the mobs to get the quest items, and loot them individually on each character. It’s a real hassle. When I do it I watch people show up, finish their gather quest, and move on while I’m still grinding out the mobs getting 1/5th of the experience per kill. Then someone else shows up, finishes their quest, and moves on while I’m still there grinding away.

Most viable is to just dungeon grind. But in that situation you need a tank and a healer. So now you have to learn tanking and healing and pulling, and you have to manage the rotation of tank, heal, and DPS.

It’s an earned advantage.

You got outplayed, and it was fair. Accept it.

Whatever you tell yourself so you can sleep at night.

“Video game exploit” is defined as “the use of a bug or glitches, game system, rates, hit boxes, speed or level design etc. by a player to their advantage in a manner not intended by the game’s designers.”

If you can convince me that the original vanilla WoW game designers intended for people to pay extra real life money and use 3rd party software to multibox in order to gain an advantage, you might have an argument.

Otherwise, it’s an exploit and it’s pay-to-win, both of which are cheating in my book and deserve a /frown.

Kerg frowns with disappointment at you.

I understand you’re frustrated, but do try to be mature.

Well considering multiboxing has been with us since release, and considering Blizzard has always allowed it, and considering that Blizzard employees themselves multiboxed in vanilla, and considering that Blizzard even links players to a how-to guide… “intended” or not, it’s part of the game, and always has been.

Neither of these are true for the reasons I’ve outlined.

INB4 dismissive comment and emoji.

Just because an exploit or pay-to-win practice is not disallowed by Blizzard (because it makes them money) doesn’t mean I can’t frown upon the people who take advantage of it and think lesser of them. Last I checked, frowning upon people is also not disallowed by Blizzard.

As I already explained to you, multiboxing is neither an exploit nor is it pay to win. I understand you don’t like multiboxing, and being on the losing side of an argument is frustrating, but being willfully ignorant and insistent on being wrong is not a good look nor does it do you any favors.

If you’re looking for acceptance from your peers or a feeling of legitimacy, you’re not going to get it from me. Sorry.
