I rolled on an RP server, now what?

You’re welcome Edaene, I’m glad to hear it. We have an active Discord, hop on over, get to know folks, and find that Just Right guild.

Ya. I been wanting to role on a rp server. but like a couple peeps are saying I always don’t role rp because of “elitists” who have a book of etiquette that must be read and adhered too like the OP’s authoritarian decree veiled in what at 1stt glance seems a benevolent psa aimed at helping acclimate would be rper’s but is more realistically a warning of adherence to pre determined expectations of behavior …I still may role rp though after a bit…

Hey there Unclejed,

I’ve got a lot of friends like you who are coming back for Classic and will be rolling on an RP server with me. They had a number of questions about what it’s like on one etc, so a big part of why I made the original post was to address the questions my friends had in a way that could help people like them here on the forums.

Sadly, there are Elitists everywhere in all aspects of this game. :frowning: If I can help people like you understand how RP realms are different than standard ones and give some guidance on what the general social conventions are and help pre-empt some potentially nasty tells from Snotrockets, then I’ve been successful.

If you want to give RP a try and are up for rolling Horde on Bloodsail Buccaneers I’ll be happy to do some basic stuff with you to see if it’s something you’d like to get into.

Oh, that’s a good one.

You can play on whatever server you want and play the way you want to play.
Have fun and don’t care what others say. Have fun.

A troll walks down the road and reads a sign. It says “Tauren Bar” and it looks interesting so he goes in.
Inside everyone is a Tauren, even the orcs, who are wearing Tauren masks and drinking Tauren ale. Everyone is having a good time, it looks nice here.

The Troll walks up to the bar and asks for a Troll beer and says “can you put some Troll music on, I don’t care for this Tauren stuff”
The Tauren bar owner says “this is a Tauren bar son, are you sure you’re in the right place, you’re welcome here but you kind’a need to fit in with the vibe ya’know” he adds MOOO! just for effect and offers the Troll a mask.

The Troll, whose name was Greatmaxamus the Paladin, looks at the big Tauren in the Tauren bar and says "but I can go wherever I want, and play the way I want to play, I don’t care what others say. Now, do you have Troll beer, OR NOT!

Everyone in the bar now notices the Troll, but they’re still cool about it, it’s just one Troll. He stands out a bit though, all Troll-ish and tusky and he seems angry!

The Tauren bar owner says “you’d have more fun if you were getting into the whole Tauren thing you know, that’s kinda why this place exists”

“Nope” says the Troll as he slopes off to the corner, bumping chairs as he goes.

“I’ll have my beer anyway I like and you lot can Moo the heck off!” he quips as he flops into a big Tauren sized chair in the corner.

To which the barman replies “But we were here first Troll, or didn’t you see the sign on the door”

The Troll drinks his beer and leaves.

Meanwhile everyone else goes back to RP-ing their Tauren characters in the Tauren bar, which was made for Taurens, or anyone else who wants to respect the the fact that it’s not all about your personal fun and sometimes you need to fit in or eff-off.
Respect RP for what it is and apologies for the weak story and character progression.

I bought this line too when Vanilla launched. Once TBC hit and i moved over to a normal realm i noticed Drama was actually way lower, and people were much better players.

I’ve seen some drama on RP servers that puts The Young and the Restless to shame, ooof! Most often though I’ve encountered a generally more pleasant environment than I did on PVE servers. But by the Dark Lady’s Leather Bustier can it get out of hand quickly when it does on an RP server. We’re dramatists after all, no?

Look up Dromtar, he’s my RP main and is All 'Bout Dem Orcs ('bout them Orcs, no deaders!)

I think a lot of people go to RP servers for the lack of non-RP interaction, than specific RP.

In other words, real life stays out and everything in game is about the game. Usually as long as you stay in game that doesn’t break immersion.

The 10% difference, like say asking someone in party chat what talents they have, or what spec they are, or who is going to pull the boss, is what irritates the true RPers. That breaks their immersion even though it is “in game”.

Usually most RPers are laid back enough to deal with that, and say something witty to let you know that they would like to stay IC, but you do get a few that will have a fit.

Well said! I’m going to be on Bloodsail but I haven’t decided if I’ll RP again or not (I was very into RPing text-based games back in the day and I dabbled with it in WoW) but I would like to know what that addon you mentioned is? I didn’t know there was such a thing!

Right now the only one I know of that’s going to be compatible with Classic is My Role Play (MRP). The project lead is rolling on BB so we can be sure it’s going to be taken care of as quickly as possible. If you haven’t already, check out the BB Discord, it’s already a busy and friendly place. See you in the game!

That’s an excellent way to describe it. You took the text right out of my keyboard, so to speak.

“I ROLLED ON AN RP SERVER, NOW WHAT?”
Stop. Roll a PVP server.
