From the [ ? ] button on the bottom toolbar there is “Latency” and “Framerate”. I want to understand these numbers. Its my impression that Latency means lag, and its separated between Home (my network) and World (the games server) but is a high number or lower number the most desirable with Latency?
Also, there is Framerate which I understand also indicated game lag, and I’m under the impression that the higher the number the better. Am I correct? Prior to when BfA went live this number for me was 120-140 consistently, and now its 50-70. Does that mean this expansion created more latency? I know from just playing the game that I have experience a lot more game lag than I’ve ever had playing wow.
Thank you for any help you can give.
Latency means lag - how quickly your data is getting to the servers and back. The lower the latency, the better. the best latencies can be maybe 30ms. under 100 is fine. high latency would indicate a poor internet connection, either at home or on the way to the servers, or that you are far away from the servers, and makes it feel like the world isn’t responsive, abilities are delayed, and things like that.
World and Home lag are both related to your connection to the game server - they just reflect different types of data. The “world” latency uses a lot of bandwidth, as it passes information about players, combat information, etc. The “home” latency number passes a lot less info, mostly including chat, auction house stuff, etc. Having these separate can sometimes be useful when troubleshooting but they should be the same most of the time.
Framerate is different. It isn’t a reflection of your connection to the server, or latency. It is how many frames your cpu and gpu can produce every second. This is primarily determined by the strength of your GPU in most games, but warcraft is unique in that framerate is often limited by your CPU in a lot of situations. Your framerate went down when BFA launched because the graphics requirements went up, and your graphics card can’t make as many frames as it could in legion when the graphics were not as demanding. Your framerate dropping down very low, below 20-30, will make the game look choppy like a slideshow.
