I miss those days when mage..

When mage was a real mage who used to control fire, ice and arcane at the same time back to BC/wotlk. Now mages are attached to only one school of magic which doesn't feel wizardly. Even shaman feels more wizardly than mages.

Mages should be able to control all kind of magic binded to arcane, as Lore says
just think of it as your mage stuck to a very specific school of study and really focused on it.
Yes, spamming useless fireballs as a Icemage was so immersive!

Call me crazy, but I actually like how specs have their own personality.

Yeah because that example really has anything to do with the rest of the Mage spells.
We used to get posts about how people wanted their mage to focus more on their school.

Stuff like why is my mage using ice barrier if I'm a fire mage??
R.I.P Frostfire bolt.

I feels this 100%.
The funny thing is that the classic definition of a Mage was a wizard that had no specialty and cast a wide variety of different types of spells.

Mages in this game aren't really Mages.

Same ,at least i can hit a rabbit with a small frost spell than to waste mana with a arcane blast.
To be fair, Elemental doesn't only apply to one school of magic... same with Enhancement.
I mained a mage all the way until legion and then played WW monk until now. POM pyro slowfall was so much fun. I feel Blizzard should one day consider reverting the talent tree to the way it once was. That change along with adding flying was a horrible mistake on Blizzards end. Balancing be damned, we want to have fun.
Play Fire. Along with fire spells for offense, you still get access to frost spells for defense/control and arcane spells for utility. I main Fire and I generally feel like a proper elementalist.

Dunno about you but I'm happy for the most part with mage in terms of flavor. I kind of wish they could do better in smaller scale PvP as I don't arena but that's pretty much my only complaint atm.
So D&D wizards across editions pick a school of magic to specialize in.

Evocation (fire ball, ice knife, damage spells)

Abjuration (protection from elements, shields and stuff)

Divination (true sight, Auguary, seeing into the future)

illusion (mirror images, invisibility, visual things)

Enchantment (charm person, feeble mind, mind based spells)

Necromancy (Animate Dead, Finger of Death, death and undeath spells)

Transmutation (polymorph, bear’s strength, transforming spells)

Conjuration (summon monsters, summoning spell)

And though you specialize it’s not like you can’t cast spells from other schools. Depending on edition you might have banned schools so necromancers mighy lose access to enchantment and illusion spells but they could still cast everything else.

I’ve always hated mages in WoW because with some exceptions they are all evocation wizards. Frost and fire are both evocation magic.
Its really simple. They want spec that do diferent thing so that the class is actualy playable.
Stop worrying about stupid class fantasy a little bit and think about what is convenient for a game.

My heart always lay with the Divination school. Defeat your enemy by knowing every little thing about them beforehand. I try my best to play a diviner in WoW. Stuff like the scrying roguestone, the farwater conch toy, and any of those little vehicle toys. They all help when scouting out bounties in warmode. Are they alone or are they surrounded by a raid group? These are the real questions. xD

Plus, they only have to ban one school, and it's an easy choice; necromancy. Stuff's gross!
I disagree, it’s more rewarding to focus on one spec

Indeed they did... and players complained that the specs were too homogeneous.

R.I.P Frostfire bolt.

I like how Khadgar can combine all three elements to destroy a dam but other Mages apparently forgot how to magically combine Fire and Frost using Arcane manipulation of those elements.

That only started in AD&D 2nd Ed. In 1st Edition, or OD&D for that matter, they were generalists. Well, you had Illusionists but they were their own class.

Edit: Core book anyway. Oriental Adventures might have had something ... I don't remember. I'd have to look it up and my books are at home.
Yeah this is one of the reasons I drifted away from Mage even though it was my favorite
